    Blood pressure is the force exerted by blood against the wall of blood vessels. The term hypertension is used to describe high blood pressure, it means elevation of blood pressure above the normal range. The normal range of Blood Pressure, in healthy adult people, is 120 mm of Hg systolic and 80 mm of Hg diastolic. When your BP is above 140/90 mm of Hg, it is considered high BP or hypertension.

    These days, hypertension is a common cardiovascular disease affecting the worldwide population. Persistent and sustained high blood pressure has damaging effects on the heart, brain, kidneys and eyes. No system of medicine has succeeded to give complete relief to hypertension in modern medicines.

    Normal BP: less than 120/80 mm Hg

    Elevated BP: systolic between 120-129 mm Hg, diastolic less than 80 mm Hg

    • State-1: systolic between 130-139 mm Hg, diastolic between 80-89 mm Hg
    • Stage-2: systolic at least 140 mm Hg, diastolic 90 mm Hg

    Hypertensive crisis: systolic greater than 180 mm Hg, diastolic greater than 120 mm Hg

    Concept of blood pressure in Ayurveda

    Blood Pressure in Ayurveda is fundamentally based on the theory of Tridosha. The blood is ejected out of the heart, then it is distributed to all parts of the body and thereafter, it is returned back to the heart through the siraha (blood vessels). This return of blood (Rasa) towards the heart is controlled by the function of Samana Vayu. Charaka clearly describes that Vyan-vayu constantly forces the blood out of the heart and distributes it. Thus, it can be said that the systolic blood pressure attained during the contraction of the heart is controlled by Vyana-vayu. it can be understood as Vyana-vayu and Prana-vayu denote the nervous control of circulation because in general, denotes all neural mechanisms. Diastolic Blood Pressure can be taken under the domain of Kapha dosha, mainly the Ava-lambaka Kapha (Kapha maintain the structural integrity of body organs) because it is the resistance offered by the structure of heart and blood vessels that controls that diastolic Blood pressure.

    Symptoms of hypertension?

    Generally, hypertension is asymptomatic, but there is a way to diagnose hypertension by checking Blood Pressure regularly. There may be:

    1. Severe headache
    2. Nausea or vomiting
    3. Pain at the back of the neck (Occipital headache)
    4. Confusion
    5. Blurred vision
    6. Nosebleeds

    How to control hypertension through Ayurveda?

    1. Take 2 grams of Sarpagandha (Rauwolfia serpentina) root powder with cold water twice a day, it also helps with insomnia. 
    2. A combination of Saptaparna (Ashtonia Scholaris) 15 gm twice a day for 21 days and 250 mg of Sarpagandha Ghanvati twice a day for 21 days. Saptaparna helps in relieving elevated diastolic blood pressure and somatic symptoms whereas Sarpagandha Ghan Vati is beneficial in reducing high systolic blood pressure and psychological symptoms.
    3. Make a juice of 3-4 garlic cloves, 10-12 basil leaves, and 1/4 cup of wheatgrass and have it once a day.

    Recommended diet and Lifestyle

    1. Regular exercise
    2. Reduce salt in your diet
    3. Increase more amount of vegetables in your diet 4. Daily 6-8 hours of sleep
    4. Avoid tea, coffee, meat and eggs
    5. Avoid smoking, because smoking increases the heart rate
