A man's sexual health, like any other subset of health, is linked to a whole variety of good lifestyle choices. Narratives of these subsets often create the illusion that one part can be improved, without overall improvement in these choices, an outcome of the unfortunate perception of the body as the sum of independent parts, as opposed to being one holistic system.
Suhas Misra, CEO of Misters.in, shares path at home to better sexual health involves some classic choices that go with a healthy lifestyle.
Sound Sleep and Regular Exercise
Data at Misters reveals that 31.7 per cent of people who have good sleep -- regularly more than seven hours-- have high erection confidence, while only 18 per cent of people who sleep less than five hours a night have similar confidence about their erection. Similarly 19.5 per cent of men who do not exercise regularly report ideal ejaculation experience--in terms of duration of intercourse--while 27 per cent of people who get some exercise report a similar experience, there is sufficient clinical research that establishes the causation implied here.
Therefore the ideal steps to take towards better sexual health for men are steps that are good for their overall health. The general advice, 'sleep well, and get some exercise regularly', seems to hold true for sexual health as well. Interestingly, getting some exercise itself is likely to improve the quality of sleep, so that might be the best first step. Other ways to improve sleep include eating dinner early, and cutting down on caffeine--so limiting tea, coffee or soft drink consumption.
Ayurveda is the Key to Better Sexual Health
This is one reason why Ashwagandha is often suggested for better sexual health in Ayurveda. Given its clinically studied action to reduce stress, it helps with the quality of sleep, and is probably a great addition to your daily routine. While it is not part of a regular diet, there are some great OTC formulations like Ashwagandha Pro that can be consumed regularly for both direct and indirect improvements in sexual health.
Lack of sleep, and a greater need for sleep to function well, is also often caused by a drop in free testosterone, the male hormone. It has been established that testosterone peaks in men in early adulthood, and starts declining at the rate of 1 per cent a year from around age 40. Testosterone also has a direct impact on sexual function, with very low levels being associated with a drop in libido, reduction in number of morning erections, and other such challenges which include seventeen signs of male ageing (as established from the Ageing Male Symptoms (AMS) questionnaire) that also include stress, anxiety, loss of strength, and increase in aches and joint pain.
It is no surprise that one of the other most widely used Ayurvedic ingredients to improve sexual health is Shilajit, which is known to improve free testosterone and therefore is a great option for improvement in sexual function.
Ayurveda is of course a comprehensive system, rather than a set of symptomatic treatments, and therefore any ayurvedic expert, after careful questioning will typically draw up a diet plan that includes both foods to include in, and those to exclude from, a person's diet for holistic improvement.
Yoga to Boost Sex Drive
Most Ayurvedic experts also suggest adding yoga to the regular routine for improvement in sexual function. A few Yoga asanas like Kumbhakasana (Plank Pose), Dhanurasana (Bow Pose), Uttanapadasana (Raised Leg Pose), Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Bend), Naukasana (Boat Pose) are associated with improvement in sexual function but these should be attempted only as part of a comprehensive yoga plan, defined by an expert.
Better sexual health is often about better health!

Gandhinagar, June 22 (IANS) A women activist forum, which demanded that a police complaint be filed by Monday midnight in the Jamnagar GG hospital sexual harassment incident, announced that it will stage protests against the police "inaction" from Tuesday.A female attendant at the hospital had, on last Tuesday, alleged that they were under pressure from the hospital management to have physical relations with them in order to continue working there."It will be a week since Chief Minister Vijay Rupani ordered a probe in the sexual harassment allegations by an attendant in the Jamnagar's GG hospital. Till now, we have not seen any concrete action in the case. And shockingly, the victims were cross-examined by the panel who was recording their statements, which is absolutely in violation of sexual harassment guidelines," Shetalben Sheth, the founding member of the Mahila Nyay Manch formed recently in Jamnagar told the IANS."The female attendants then complained that to us and we went there and had their true, undistorted statements recorded. Besides that, we have 15 statements from the victim attendants, male attendants and others, in a notorised format in affidavits, which we have submitted to the Superintendent of Police, the ASP and sent copies to the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and the Home Minister. Despite the victims' clearly mentioning the culprit's name, attempts were there to shield him. Still no FIR has been lodged," she added.Sheth, along with nine others, will be staging a 'Dharna' at the Lal Bungalow area, a prominent place in the city where most of the government offices are situated, from Tuesday."We had asked for the permission for the dharna, we were denied... However, I'll be there tomorrow if complaint is not lodged by tonight," she asserted.A row erupted at the GG Hospital in Jamnagar when a female attendant made the allegations."We didn't get wages and we're being fired without any notice. The girls are under pressure to maintain physical relationships with managers and should they deny, they're shown the door," the female attendant had alleged in front of the media on Tuesday. The hospital management however, denied any such complaints reaching them. The hospital authorities had initially recruited 250 attendants before March and thereafter during Covid-19's second wave, 570 more had been recruited. These attendants were assigned to treat individuals by giving them food, water and assist the nursing staff when needed. Rupani had announced a three member committee to investigate the alleged sexual harassment in GG hospital. He had on Wednesday instructed the Jamnagar District Collector and Health Commissioner, Jaiprakash Shivhare to form the committee, comprising the Assistant Collector, the Assistant Superintendent of Police and the Dean of the Dental College, Jamnagar.--IANSamc/vd
Gandhinagar, June 16 (IANS) Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Wednesday ordered a probe into the sexual harassment allegations made by an attendant in the Jamnagar's designated Covid care government GG hospital and formed a three-member committee to investigate.A woman attendant on Tuesday had alleged that female attendants were being pressured by the hospital management to have physical relationship with them in order to continue their services. The Minister of State for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja said, "The Gujarat CM had received such complaints that the female attendants were pressured to have physical relationships with their supervisors through WhatsApp chats. Such kind of sexual harassment won't be tolerated by the state government anywhere in Gujarat and those who are found to be involved in this won't be spared and dealt with the strictest action. After discussions in the cabinet meeting held today, the Gujarat Chief Minister has ordered for a three-member committee to probe this incident." The Gujarat Chief Minister on Wednesday instructed the Jamnagar district collector, Ravi Shankar and the health commissioner Jaiprakash Shivhare to form the committee which will comprise of the Assistant Collector, the Assistant Superintendent of Police and the Dean of the Medical College, Jamnagar. The row erupted at the GG Hospital in Jamnagar on Tuesday when a female attendant alleged to the media that they were sexually harassed by their managers. She alleged that they were pressured to have physical relationship with them or else were shown the door."We didn't get wages and we're being fired without any notice. The girls are pressured to maintain physical relationships with managers and should they deny they're shown the door," said the female attendant. The hospital management, however, denied having any such complaints reaching them. Dr Dharmesh Vasavda, the in-charge medical superintendent of the hospital said on Tuesday, "We never received any written complaint regarding such allegations or the type of allegations that the girl attendant is making prior going to the press. We'll ask her to submit a proper complaint prior to taking any action.""We will be submitting our report to the committee. Right now, we are carrying our inquiry on this," Ravi Shankar told the reporters on Wednesday after the formation of the committee."We had initially recruited 250 such attendants before March and thereafter during Covid-19 second wave peak, 570 more had been recruited," added Shankar. These attendants were assigned to treat individuals by giving them food, water and assist the nursing staff when needed. A majority of these attendants had been recruited post second wave of Covid-19 situation in March-April, but since the amount of coronavirus cases diminished, the hospital management began relieving them.--IANSamc/dpb
According to the experts, watching pornography can result in thinking that this is a way of life, which distorts the perception of reality.
"Excessive pornography can create disinhibition, desensitisation and can also result into thinking that this is a way of life, which distorts the perception of reality," Sameer Parikh, Director - Head of Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences Department, Fortis Healthcare, New Delhi, told IANS.
"It can also bring in a lot of aggressive arousals, which does impact the way an individual looks at sexuality," Parikh added.
The expert said that if this viewing happens at a younger age, where there is a lot of vulnerability to forming beliefs, attitudes and behaviour, there is even more response.
According to Nand Kumar, Professor, Department of Psychiatry, All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), New Delhi, sexual violence is related to certain types of pornography that may influence aggression and sexual crime, depending upon the content of the pornography.
"Aggressive pornography materials are more likely to precipitate sexual violence and crime. The personality of the person along with duration and frequency of the exposure to pornographic contretemps also colours the sexual violence related to pornography," Kumar told IANS.
A meta-analysis published in the Journal of Communication showed that consuming pornography increases the likelihood of physical and verbal sexual aggression.
The study highlighted that the associations were stronger for verbal than physical sexual aggression, although both were significant. The general pattern of results suggested that violent content may be an exacerbating factor.
"Yes, there is some evidence that suggests there is a correlation between the various acts of transgression, molestation, violence and viewing related to pornography," said Parikh.
"To say that all crimes are related to pornography is not a right way to put it. There are a lot of other factors, but like I said, there is some correlation of pornography as well," he added.
The experts mentioned that the time frame where an individual indulges in pornography impacts the day-to-day function, sleep, work, your academic and social life. And, to treat pornography addiction, one must look into self-correction, behaviour correction including digital detox, involving yourself in different things, taking the help of an expert as well.
On being asked if banning pornographic content can be useful for many, Parikh said, if porn is banned, individuals will find one way or the other to navigate it through loopholes.
"We can rather use media literacy that empowers young people to know the right choice. Make them understand the difference between fake and real. Enable them to understand the importance of their safety, creating more awareness," Parikh said.
"If we talk about sex education, various components can be incorporated in educating the masses on how pornography can affect an individual's sexual behaviour," Parikh noted.
