Bengaluru, May 25 (IANS) Much to the embarrassment of Karntaka's ruling BJP, a purported close aide of its Bommanahalli MLA Satish Reddy was arrested on Tuesday by the Bengaluru police's Central Crime Branch police in connection with the alleged bed scam - exposed by the ruling party members earlier this month with much fanfare.On May 4, Bangaloe South MP Tejasvi Surya, accompanied by his uncle and Basavangudi MLA, L.S. Subramanya, Bommanahalli MLA Reddy and Chickpet MLA Uday Garudhachar stormed into Begaluru south Covid war room of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike to flag the scam. Surya, who had also read out a list of 17 Muslims working there and questioned their appointment, had alleged that hospitals in Bengaluru "blocked" beds in fake names to make money, at a time when Covid cases were rising in Karnataka. He claimed that officials of the BBMP "colluded" with private nursing homes and hospitals to block beds and allocate them for exorbitant fees.The CCB police statement said that Babu, 34, a resident of Roopena Agrahara in Bommanhalli, was arrested on Monday evening after his role of blocking beds and selling them at higher price for Covid patients came to light.A senior police officer, who did not want to be identified, said that the arrested is a personal assistant of Bommanahalli MLA Reddy.Babu's role of blocking beds in BBMP hospital came to light when they examined the CCTV footage of the war rom and the statements given by the staff members, the police said.The Karnataka government had ordered reserving 80 per cent of the beds in the private hospitals for Covid patients. The BBMP was assigned to allot beds for the Covid patients seeking treatment in private hospitals. However, due to the alarming rise in Covid cases, most of the beds were fully occupied even as the demand was growing manifold.The CCB police has already arrested five people -- Nethravathi, Rohith, Venkat Subba Rao, Manjunath and Punith -- in connection with the case. The sleuths had conducted searches in the war room and obtained technical data. Doctors, who are in charge of each zone war room, had also been questioned.--IANSnbh/vd
Moradabad (UP), May 24 (IANS) A Muslim man was allegedly assaulted by a group of men led by a person calling himself a 'gau rakshak (cow vigilante)'.The victim, identified as Mohammed Shakir, is in the business of transporting and selling meat. The incident took place on Sunday afternoon in a village under the Katghar Police circle when Shakir was transporting meat. Based on a complaint lodged by the victim's brother, the police have registered a case against the men who led the assault. However, the police have also filed a counter case against Mohammad Shakir, under IPC sections relating to 'mischief by killing an animal', 'committing an act likely to spread infection', and 'violation of Covid lockdown guidelines'. Shakir had been arrested but was not jailed as the sections invoked against him are 'bailable'. He is currently recovering at home. The 'gau rakshak' Manoj Thakur, who led the assault has not been arrested as yet. Moradabad superintendent of police (SP), Prabhakar Chaudhary said in a statement, "We got a video of a meat-seller being beaten up and we have filed a case. New Delhi, May 19 (IANS) Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Wednesday reviewed the public health response to Covid-19 and progress of vaccination with West Bengal and the eight northeastern states, and expressed concern about the situation there.Applauding the dedication and patience shown by the states in their fight against the pandemic and in simultaneously ensuring the welfare of the people, he said: "We fought together in 2020 and will fight together in 2021 under the leadership of the Prime Minister."Underscoring the critical importance of vaccination drive, he said that by the end of the year, the country will be in a position to vaccinate at least all of its adult population.Highlighting the critical challenges faced by the NE states and West Bengal, he noted that in Mizoram, all districts are showing a rise in new cases, Nagaland has shown a sharp increase in daily cases (from 15-20 per day to 300) and weekly positivity rate (one per cent to 34 per cent), in Assam, Kamrup (Metropolitan) district is contributing almost 45 per cent of the daily new cases, while in Meghalaya, East Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi districts are also reporting sharp increases in daily cases.Also, Manipur's recovery rate of 78 per cent and CFR of more than one per cent was highlighted as a matter of concern, while Sikkim was advised to strengthen community surveillance and ensure strict monitoring of home quarantine to address its high CFR.In Arunachal Pradesh, ICU occupancy is almost 22.5 per cent while Capital complex and Changlang districts are reporting maximum cases."All districts of West Bengal are showing a steep increase in positivity rate. Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Howrah and Nadia were flagged as districts of concern. In Tripura, there has been a steep rise in positivity from 1.3 per cent in April to around 8.7 per cent now. West Tripura, Unakoti, South Tripura were flagged as districts of concern," the Minister said.Harsh Vardhan cited the new emerging trend in the country that now the smaller states are showing an upward trend and there is a need to be cautious about this trend. He asked the states to focus on increasing testing in a timely manner along with upgrading the health infrastructure."With changes in guidelines, more and more antigen tests can be done now, so that mortality rates can be decreased. Need to focus on peri-urban and rural areas significantly," he said.Union Minister of State for Health, Ashwini Kumar Choubey reiterated that testing should be increased, particularly RT-PCR. He stressed on the need for extensive use of tele-consultation especially in the hilly states to reach to the underserved areas."Centre is also assisting states on medicines for black fungus and on Oxygen. New York, March 23 (IANS) A team of researchers have showed that consuming a 25 gram serving of processed meat a day can be associated with a 44 per cent increased risk of developing dementia, while unprocessed meat was linked to lesser chances of it.The findings, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, indicated that people who consumed some unprocessed red meat, such as beef, pork or veal, 50g a day were 19 per cent less likely to develop dementia."Worldwide, the prevalence of dementia is increasing and diet as a modifiable factor could play a role. Our research adds to the growing body of evidence linking processed meat consumption, to increased risk of a range of non-transmissible diseases," said lead researcher Huifeng Zhang from the University of Leeds in the US.There are around 50 million dementia cases globally, with around 10 million new cases diagnosed every year. Its development and progression are associated with both genetic and environmental factors, including diet and lifestyle.For the study, the team studied a database containing in-depth genetic and health information from half a million UK participants aged 40 to 69.The data included how often participants consumed different kinds of meat, with six options from never to once or more daily, collected in 2006-2010 by the UK Biobank. Among the participants, 2,896 cases of dementia emerged over an average of eight years of follow up. These people were generally older, more economically deprived, less educated, more likely to smoke, less physically active, more likely to have stroke history and family dementia history, and more likely to be carriers of a gene which is highly associated with dementia. More men than women were diagnosed with dementia in the study population.Some people were three to six times more likely to develop dementia due to well established genetic factors, but the findings suggest the risks from eating processed meat were the same whether or not a person was genetically predisposed to developing the disease.Those who consumed higher amounts of processed meat were more likely to be male, less educated, smokers, overweight or obese, had lower intakes of vegetables and fruits, and had higher intakes of energy, protein, and fat (including saturated fat).--IANSvc/
New Delhi, The Red Fort in New Delhi has been closed for tourists due to the recent bird flu scare. A few days back, nearly 20 crows were found dead in the monument's premises. However, according to official information, a total of 60 birds have been found dead in the Red Fort complex so far due to which the monument is being closed for tourists.
An official working in the Red Fort complex told IANS, "Dead birds are being found every day in the Red Fort complex. Nearly 60 dead birds have been found so far. A team from Animal Husbandry is investigating the deaths."
"After talking to the Animal Husbandry team, it has been decided that till the situation in the Red Fort normalises, it will remain closed."
Earlier, 20 crows were found dead which on investigation confirmed the presence of bird flu and the monument was closed on January 19. (IANS)
New Delhi, Jan 23 (IANS) A document issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India suggests that proper cooking inactivates the bird flu virus present inside meat and eggs.In view of the bird flu scare in the country, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a guidance document on "Safe handling, processing and consumption of poultry meat and eggs during bird flu pandemic" for creating awareness among the food business operators (FBOs) and consumers. The document suggests that proper cooking inactivates the virus present inside meat and eggs. Poultry meat and eggs from the areas affected by the outbreak of bird flu should not be consumed raw or partially cooked. Properly prepared and cooked poultry meat and eggs are safe to eat, the FSSAI said. "However, to date, no evidence indicates that anyone has become infected following the consumption of properly cooked poultry or poultry products, even if these foods were contaminated with the avian influenza virus," FSSAI said. The World Health Organization (WHO) also states that it is safe to consume poultry meat and eggs. According to the WHO official website, there is no epidemiological data which suggests that the disease can be transmitted to humans through cooked food. The major Do's and Don'ts suggested are -- do not eat half-boiled eggs, do not eat undercooked chicken, avoid direct contact with birds in the infected areas, avoid touching dead birds with bare hands, do not keep raw meat in the open, no direct contact with raw meat, use mask and gloves at the time of handling raw chicken, wash hands frequently, maintain the cleanliness of surroundings and eat chicken, eggs and their products after cooking. The virus is destroyed at a temperature of 70-degree Celsius if held for about three seconds. Also, properly cooking meat or eggs to achieve a temperature of 74-degree Celsius in eggs or all parts of meat will inactivate the virus. The FSSAI has urged the FBOs and consumers not to panic and ensure proper handling and cooking of poultry meat and eggs for their safe consumption as outlined in the guidance document. Although sick birds will normally stop producing eggs, eggs laid in the early phase of the disease could contain the virus in the egg-white and yolk as well as on the surface of the shell.
