Any condition, whether it be cancer, heart disease, or arthritis, can be treated with awareness. It is common knowledge that arthritis can hurt, swell, and inflame one or more joints. Instead of referring to a single illness, it is an all-encompassing term used to describe a number of disorders. It's one of the most prevalent health problems in the nation.
There are more than 100 different types of arthritis, but the most common are rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis (OA) (RA). OA is the deterioration of the cartilage that covers the ends of bones, as opposed to RA, which largely affects the immune system and can harm joints, muscles, connective tissue, tendons, and fibrous tissue. Any joint, including the hands, hips, knees, and spine, can be harmed by it.
There are more than 180 million cases of arthritis in India, making it more prevalent than many other well-known diseases including diabetes, AIDS, and cancer, according to an analysis of arthritis tests conducted in SRL Diagnostics' facilities. About 14% of Indians seek medical attention each year for this joint issue. Despite the fact that this condition is quite common, there are still a number of beliefs that prevent people from receiving the treatment they need to relieve their symptoms and enhance their quality of life. Dr. Biren Nadkarni, Senior Orthopedic Consultant and Joint Replacement Surgeon from Sitaram Bhartia Institute and Holy Family Hospital in New Delhi, dispels some common myths regarding arthritis in India. Let's look at it:
Arthritis is An Old-Age Disease and Cannot Affect Children
Fact: Although there are numerous varieties of arthritis that can afflict both children and young adults, the condition is more prevalent in older people. The most frequent kind of arthritis in children, juvenile arthritis (also known as childhood arthritis or juvenile rheumatoid arthritis), can permanently harm joints.
All Joint Pains Are Arthritis
Fact: A number of illnesses, including tendonitis, bursitis, and other soft-tissue injuries, can cause joint pain and have a pain profile resembling that of arthritis. Therefore, it is crucial to obtain a precise medical diagnosis before treating any kind of joint discomfort.
When You Start Experiencing Joint Pain, You Should Wait to See If It Goes Away on Its Own
Fact: Absolutely false. Early detection and treatment of arthritis can not only save your joints but also protect your important organs from harm. Some types, like rheumatoid arthritis, can harm the heart, blood vessels, brain, skin, eyes, lungs, and skin. It is important to identify the type of arthritis you have as soon as possible since many treatments are available, and starting the right course of treatment can help you avoid suffering long-term effects.
Exercising Will Worsen Your Condition
Fact: Exercise helps lessen discomfort and swelling while boosting strength, range of motion, and flexibility. Inactivity can make the symptoms worse, causing the pain and swelling to worsen. Before you enrol yourself in any exercise program, it is also important to know what your limits are and what level of exercise you can benefit from.
Heating Pads Relieves Sore Joints
Fact: Joint pain can be relieved by ice as well as heat. Heat can ease pain and stiffness in joints and muscles when applied properly. The cold application might help to reduce soreness and joint inflammation.
When a joint is stiff or hurting, people should apply heat before exercising. Additionally, cold can reduce pain and may be helpful if a joint is irritated, especially if there is swelling post - exercise.
Hand And Feet Will Remain Deformed
Fact: Deformities may result from untreated and undiagnosed arthritis. However, this can be avoided with early detection and treatment. Most patients with arthritis lead functional and productive lives.
Dr. Biren Nadkarni concludes by saying, "despite advancements in medicine, there is still much to learn about arthritis. Simple precautions should be taken in order to stop the disease process from developing and affecting our life. Arthritis is accompanied by a number of controllable and non-modifiable risk factors. We should be aware that by maintaining a lifestyle that includes exercise and a nutritious, balanced diet, we may lower the risk of some types of arthritis and halt their progression, in keeping with this year's theme, it's in your hands, take action. Better treatments will undoubtedly develop as scientists continue to study these disorders". (Dr. Biren Nadkarni, Senior Orthopedic Consultant)

London: Love to consume soft drinks with no added sugars, table-top sweeteners, and yogurt/cottage cheese containing artificial sweeteners? Beware, you may be at increased risk of cancer, warned a study.
Artificial sweeteners in food or beverages reduce added sugar content and corresponding calories while maintaining sweetness.
But the study, published in the journal PLOS Medicine, showed that people who consumed larger quantities of artificial sweeteners, particularly aspartame and acesulfame-K, had higher risk of overall cancer compared to non-consumers. Higher risks were observed for breast cancer and obesity-related cancers.
"Our findings do not support the use of artificial sweeteners as safe alternatives for sugar in foods or beverages and provide important and novel information to address the controversies about their potential adverse health effects," Charlotte Debras from the French National Institute for Health and Medical Research (Inserm).
Debras added that the results are in line with several experimental in vivo/in vitro studies that have also claimed the link between cancer and artificial sweeteners.
Researchers from Inserm and Sorbonne Paris Nord University in France analysed data from 102,865 French adults.
Participants enrolled voluntarily and self-reported medical history, sociodemographic, diet, lifestyle, and health data. Researchers gathered data concerning artificial sweetener intake from 24-hour dietary records.
After collecting cancer diagnosis information during follow-up, the researchers conducted statistical analyses to investigate the associations between artificial sweetener intakes and cancer risk.
The results suggest that artificial sweeteners, used in many food and beverage brands worldwide, may represent a modifiable risk factor for cancer prevention.
These findings also provide novel information in the context of the ongoing re-evaluation of food additive sweeteners by the European Food Safety Authority and other health agencies globally. (agency)

Having a company of a pet friend may protect you from memory loss in later life and other kinds of cognitive decline, finds a new study.
The preliminary research found that pet ownership was especially beneficial for working verbal memory, such as memorisation of word lists, reports CNN.
"To our knowledge, our study is the first to consider the effect of duration of pet ownership on cognitive health," first author Jennifer Applebaum, a sociology doctoral candidate and National Institute of Health predoctoral fellow at University of Florida, was quoted as saying by CNN in an email.
"And it is not just cats and dogs that can boost the brain. People in the study also cared for rabbits, hamsters, birds, fish and reptiles, Applebaum said, although "dogs were most prevalent, followed by cats," Applebaum added.
Owning household pets for five years or more produced the most benefit, delaying cognitive decline by 1.2 points over the six-year period of the study compared with the rate of decline in people without pets, the study, to be presented at the American Academy of Neurology's 74th Annual Meeting, indicated.
For the study, the team analysed cognitive data on more than 1,300 adults who participated in the Health and Retirement Study, a nationally representative study tracking the lives of Americans age 50 and older.
"Having a pet or multiple pets combines many core components of a brain-healthy lifestyle," said Richard Isaacson, director of the Alzheimer's Prevention Clinic in the Center for Brain Health at Florida Atlantic University's Schmidt College of Medicine.

Nutraceuticals, functional foods, and supplemental micronutrients have the potential to inhibit cancer cell proliferation and induce apoptosis. A variety of natural dietary herbs have even been shown to have a potential role in the prevention and treatment of cancer, and are regarded as an effective strategy by Nutraceutical experts all over the world.
Epidemiological studies have consistently demonstrated that dietary habits are one of the most important predictors of chronic diseases, including several types of cancer. Thus, diet and food have a direct impact on health and disease.
Through nutrition, humans have evolved a sophisticated and cooperative system of antioxidant defence mechanisms against toxic oxygen intermediates, according to biochemical and epidemiological evidence. This suggests that increasing antioxidant intake through nutrition may significantly reduce the risk of cancer.
Following are some of the herbs suggested by the experts in nutraceutical space which has significantly shown positive results in the prevention of cancer cells-
Graviola (Annona muricata)
Annona Muricata, also known as Graviola, soursop, Brazilian pawpaw, or guanabana, is an evergreen tree native to the Americas' tropical regions and a member of the Annonaceae family.
Graviola contains hundreds of acetogenins, which are chemicals (ACGs). ACGs have the ability to kill many different types of cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone.
It aids in the inhibition of energy production in cancer cells while also inhibiting the oxidative stress response. Graviola has also been shown to cause apoptosis.
In addition to its positive effects, the herb may cause some side effects such as low blood pressure, low sugar levels, or even nerve damage. As a result, it is strongly advised not to consume directly.
To avoid any access consumption or such side effects, please use a product supplement that contains the desired amount of Graviola.
Catharanthus Rosea, also known as Madagascar Periwinkle, is a miracle plant. It is a member of the Apocynaceae family. It is the most medicinally valuable plant species in the Apocynaceae family, which is used worldwide in traditional herbal medicine.
The plant has also been used in Ayurvedic medicine and traditional Chinese medicine for a long time. Western medical science began researching this plant in the twentieth century.
Catharanthus roseus is well-known for producing the anticancer drugs vinblastine and vincristine, which are derived from the dimerization of the MIAs vindoline and catharanthine. The anti-tumor activity discovered in C. Roseus is due to the presence of dimeric alkaloids, which are already widely used in industry.
Indian Podophyllum is another name for Podophyllum. Vanyakarkati is its Ayurvedic name. The rootstock of this herb has beneficial properties that aid in the prevention of cancer. Podophyllum is a purgative that is also used to treat vaginal warts.
Etoposide and teniposide, two podophyllotoxin derivatives, are used in cancer treatment. Etoposide is an alkaloid derived from the mandrake plant Podophyllum peltatum that is used to treat germ cell tumours, lung cancer, Hodgkin's and non-lymphomas, Hodgkin's gastric cancer, breast cancer, and testicular cancer.
Although podophyllotoxin has a high cytotoxic effect and acts as a tubulin polymerization inhibitor, if used excessively, it is more toxic than beneficial as an anticancer drug. As a result, it should only be consumed in the amounts recommended by an expert in the form of supplements, with the quantities added rationally. (Suresh Garg, MD and Founder, Zeon Lifesciences)

Ayurveda defines cancer as a chronic imbalance of tridosha (pathophysiological entity), datus (tissue), and triguna (mental nature) and can be treated without side effects. In Ayurvedic concept, according to 'Charaka' and 'Sushruta Samhitas', cancer is described as inflammatory or non-inflammatory swelling and referred to as 'Granthi' (minor neoplasm) or 'Arbuda' (major neoplasm). The nervous system (Vata or air), the venous system (Pitta or fire) and the arterial system (Kapha or water) are three basic elements of Ayurveda and very important for the normal functioning of the body.
How Cancer Spread?
As a cancerous tumor grows, the bloodstream or lymphatic system can carry cancer cells to other parts of the body. In this process, cancer cells can develop into new tumors. This is known as metastasis.
One of the first places where cancer often spreads is the lymph nodes. The lymph nodes are small, bean shaped organs that help fight infection. They are grouped in different parts of the body, such as the neck, groin, and armpits.
Cancer can also spread to remote parts of the body through the bloodstream. These parts may include bone, liver, lungs, or brain. Even if the cancer spreads, it is named after the area where the cancer started. For example, if breast cancer has spread to the lungs, it is called metastatic breast cancer, not lung cancer.
Types of Cancer
Doctors classify cancers based on where they occur. Four main types of cancer are here:
Carcinoma: Cancer begins in the skin or the tissue that covers the surface of internal organs and glands. Carcinomas usually form solid tumors. They all are the most common type of cancer. The examples of carcinoma include breast cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, and lung cancer.
Sarcoma: Sarcoma begins with the tissues that support and connect the body. Sarcomas can occur in fat, muscle, nerves, tendons, joints, blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, cartilage, or bone.
Leukemia: Leukemia is a cancer of the blood. Leukemia begins when healthy blood cells change and become uncontrollable. The four main types of leukemia are acute lymphocytic leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, acute myelogenous leukemia, and chronic myelogenous leukemia.
Lymphoma: Lymphoma is cancer that forms in the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a network of blood vessels and glands that help fight infection. There are two main types of lymphoma. Hodgkin's lymphoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Causes of Cancer
There can be various causes for cancer, some of the common reasons include:
DNA damage or mutations resulting in damage to genes involved in cell division
Carcinogens such as tobacco
Ultraviolet rays and automobiles
Passive smoking and chewing tobacco
Alcohol use and obesity
Lack of physical activity
Sunlight and excessive exposure to ultraviolet light
Exposure to X-ray radiation
Cell phones and cell phone towers
Symptoms of Cancer
Indigestion problems or trouble swallowing
Unexplained weight loss
Cancer Treatment in Ayurveda
Ayurvedic cancer treatment is very profound and holistic in its approach. Ayurveda treats illness according to the specific nature of the patient, the aggravated bodily energies involved, and the bodily tissues that are affected.
The treatment does not only focus on the area of the malignancy but on the entire system, as the entire organism must return to harmony so that the disease is treated permanently and does not recur elsewhere.
The body must be cleansed of toxins that cause cells to attack the body. Treatment includes the administration of herbs to cleanse the blood along with the adoption of a detoxifying diet. Circulatory-stimulating herbs are also prescribed to promote circulation, change blood stagnation, increase efficient elimination of toxins, and help heal tissues. Herbs and minerals that restore immunity are administered to increase the strength of weakened patients.
Important part of the treatment is the relaxation of the mind. Suppression of emotion or emotional stagnation is a significant causal factor and a barrier to effective treatment of this condition. The patient needs to heal himself at the deepest level of his individuality. Meditation, counseling, yoga, pranayama, and the study of spiritual philosophy are recommended to support this aspect of personal healing.
Ayurvedic treatment Ayurvedic holistic methods for cancer treatment include:
Abstinence from foods and lifestyle that cause tridosha (vata, pitta, kapha) imbalance, Elimination of toxins through Panchakarma, Restoration of healthy functions of jatharagni (digestive power), Rejuvenation through rasayanas, Ayurvedic preparations can act as an adjuvant or adjunctive therapy along with chemotherapy or radiation therapy. It is also of great help in postoperative care, Ayurvedic medicines help minimize the side effects of these therapies.
Immunotherapy: Immunotherapy is one of the effective cancer treatment therapies in which the body's natural defences are stimulated to fight cancer. This therapy works in either of two ways: it stops the growth of cancer-causing cells or slows the growth of cancer cells. Immunotherapy drugs are constantly evolving and are accepted by cancer patients as they have less well-known reactions or side effects compared to chemotherapy and radiation.
Doctors have identified several ways to reduce cancer risk, including:
Give Up Smoking: Quit smoking if you smoke. If you don't smoke, don't start. Smoking is reason of several types of cancer, not just lung cancer. Quitting smoking now can reduce your risk of cancer in the future.
Avoid Exposure to Excessive Sunlight: The sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays can increase the risk of skin cancer. Stay in the shade, wear protective clothing, or apply sunscreen to limit exposure to sunlight.
Eat A Healthy Diet: Choose a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Choose whole grains and lean proteins. Limit your intake of processed meats.
Exercise Most Days of The Week: Regular exercise helps reduce the risk of cancer. Do atleast 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week. If you don't exercise regularly, start slowly and exercise for at least 30 minutes.
Keep A Healthy Weight: Being overweight or obese can increase the risk of cancer. Strive to achieve and maintain a healthy weight by combining a healthy diet with regular exercise.
If You Choose to Drink, Drink Moderate Alcohol: If you choose to drink alcohol, drink it in moderation. For healthy adults, this means up to 1 cup a day for women and up to 2 cups a day for men.
Schedule A Cancer Screening Test: Talk to your doctor about what type of cancer screening is best for you based on your risk factors.
Talk to Your Doctor About Immunity: Certain viruses increase the risk of cancer. Immunization can help prevent viruses such as hepatitis B, which increases the risk of liver cancer, and human papillomavirus (HPV), which increases the risk of cervical and other cancers.
An immediate challenge today is the prevention of Diabetes among the youth and pregnant women, Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh said on Sunday.
