Scientists at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) here have sequenced the genome of giloy a plant with medicinal properties, which shot to fame during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
Giloy or guduchi is a climber with heart-shaped leaves, has major applications in pharmaceuticals and ayurvedic formulations to treat various health conditions and was used widely during the pandemic to boost immunity.Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia) is the first species ever sequenced from the Menispermaceae plant family, which comprises more than 400 species having therapeutic values, the institute said in a statement on Monday.
The availability of Giloy genome will also help in bridging the missing link between its genomic and medicinal properties. The new study will also provide leads for exploring the genomic basis of its medicinal properties, the team said.
The team performed a deep transcriptome sequencing of leaf tissue of the plant. The draft genome assembly had a size of 1.01 gigabase pairs and contained 19,474 coding gene sequences. The research is published in the preprint server bioRxiv.
"Giloy is considered as an important multipurpose medicinal plant in ayurvedic science. This plant came into the limelight due to its immunomodulatory and antiviral activity after the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic. It has been used in various health conditions due to its immune-modulatory, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-microbial, anti-viral, anti-cancer properties, among others," said Shruti Mahajan, doctoral student at IISER Bhopal, in the statement.
Previous studies have shown that a compound from Giloy was reported to target the two proteases of SARS-CoV-2 virus namely Mpro and Spike proteases, and another compound was predicted to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 Mpro and also disrupts viral spike protein and host ACE-2 interaction. Treatment with giloy extract modulates the various pathways of the immune system for improved immunity.
These multiple medicinal properties are because of the presence of its secondary metabolites. Despite these medicinal properties, the unavailability of its genome sequence was a constraint in studying the genomic basis of the medicinal properties. Thus, the genome sequence of Giloy could be a breakthrough as the potential therapeutic agent for diseases like Covid in the future, the researchers said.
Moreover, the usage of giloy is also recommended under ayurveda practice by the Ministry of AYUSH and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, in prophylactic care as well as therapeutic applications for all symptomatic or asymptomatic patients infected with Covid-19. It is also used in fever and diabetes.

Atmakuru (Andhra Pradesh), July 23 (IANS) Andhra Pradesh Industries Minister Mekapati Goutham Reddy on Friday inaugurated an oxygen plant funded by Bollywood actor Sonu Sood at Atmakuru in Nellore district.The plant has been built at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore in Atmakuru, which also happens to be the Assembly constituency of Reddy.On behalf of the people of Atmakuru, the minister invited Sood to visit the constituency. Incidentally, the popular actor has agreed to visit Atmakuru in the next two months."Instead of building the plant in an urban area which has all the facilities, Sood built the oxygen plant in a rural set up, which shows his wholeheartedness," Reddy said.Meanwhile, Nagalakshmi, a specially-abled woman, came forward to donate Rs 25,000 each to the Sonu Sood Foundation and the Andhra Pradesh CM Relief Fund. Chennai, June 3 (IANS) Vedanta Ltd on Thursday said it has commissioned an oxygen cylinder bottling plant at its copper smelter plant Sterlite Copper in Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu.According to Vedanta, the Rs 11 crore plant has a capacity to bottle 400 medical grade oxygen cylinders per day."While our technology was so far focused on producing liquid oxygen, overseas technology providers have helped us implement processes to capture gaseous oxygen as well, which was so far being vented out as a byproduct," Vedanta said.Sterlite Copper has 1,050 ton per day (tpd) oxygen production capacity of which 200 tpd will be liquid oxygen and the balance is in gaseous form.The company had earlier said it has an infrastructure to transport 200-250 tpd medical oxygen to various hospitals.To utilise the balance capacity of the unit for the medical usage, Vedanta earlier said it was looking for business partners to study and provide a solution to transport 800 tpd oxygen which is available in gaseous form at 4.5 bar pressure to various hospitals in the state.Vedanta had started oxygen production at Sterlite Copper recently to supply to hospitals to meet the needs due to the spread of Covid-19 pandemic across the country.The Tamil Nadu government had ordered the closure of the copper smelter plant in 2018 following a violent protest that led to the death of 13 persons in police firing.The Supreme Court had allowed the company to operate its oxygen plant recently.The 400,000 tonne Sterlite copper smelter plant has been operating in Thoothukudi for over 25 years with a cumulative investment of about Rs 3,000 crore but was closed after the violence and opposition by locals.--IANSvj/in
Chennai, June 2 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has reiterated his request to Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan to hand over the vaccine plant of HLL Biotech Ltd near here to the state government .In a letter to Harsh Vardhan, a copy of which was released to the media here, Stalin said: "While I would like to reiterate our earlier request, I wish to highlight to you the urgency of the moment, given the need for immediate commencement of production."On the Central government's information to the state that the former would bring in a private partner on its own to operate the plant, Stalin said: "Irrespective of whether it is the Union government or the state government which is to find the partner to operationalise the plant, the need of the hour is to ensure that there is absolutely no further delay in the process."Stalin also told Harsh Vardhan that the state needs special allocation of 50 lakh doses of Covid vaccine, both though the government and non-government channels.Thanking Harsh Vardhan for the allotment of 25.84 lakh vaccine doses through the government of India channel and 16.74 lakh doses through the non-government channel, Stalin said the state be allotted vaccines at levels similar to the comparable states.--IANSvj/arm

Chennai, May 27 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu government has proposed to take on lease HLL Biotech Ltd's integrated vaccine complex (IVC) near Chennai without past liabilities to run it with a private party.In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has said that the assets of the vaccine complex be handed over to the state government on lease with full operational freedom and without past liabilities."The state government will identify a suitable private partner immediately and will make all efforts to commence vaccine production at the earliest," Stalin told Modi.According to Stalin, suitable financial arrangement for Central government to recover part of its investment can be subsequently worked out, after commencement of operations at the plant.Stalin said the high capacity vaccine production unit is lying unutilized."The government of India has already invested around Rs 700 crore in this manufacturing facility, which is almost complete but has been lying unutilized for want of additional funds," Stalin said."The recent attempt to find a private partner to run the IVC has also not borne fruit, as there were no bidders for it," Stalin pointed out to Modi.--IANSvj/pgh
