The National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB), Ministry of AYUSH has initiated a special drive to identify the patentable projects which were / are sponsored under the ‘Research and Development Component’ of Central Sector Scheme (CSS) on “Conservation, Development and Sustainable Management of Medicinal Plants”. NMPB generally sponsors various R&D programs under CSS to both government as well as private organizations across the country.
Under these sponsored / financially supported research projects, NMPB so far identified three unique projects which are novel in nature and patentable. They are: (1.) Bio-production of secondary metabolites from Aegle marmelos which is commonly known as Bel (R&D/TN-04/2006-07); (2.) In vitro production of secondary metabolites from tree species of Dashmoola (10 roots used in Ayurveda) through hairy root cultures (R&D/TN-0112013-14-NMPB); and (3.) Development of anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory agents from Dioscoria floribunda (R&D/UP-04/2015-16). While the first two projects belong to the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB), Coimbatore, the third project was carried out by Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP), Lucknow. The CIMAP filed patent is titled as “A synergistic polyherbal formulation exhibiting potential cancer activity.”
The CEO-NMPB reiterated that this is just the humble beginning for NMPB’s team and will file more patents in the coming times. The Secretary, Ministry of AYUSH congratulated the NMPB team for filing three patent applications in collaboration with the partner organizations. (Source - PIB)

Jerusalem- A team of researchers has found that cannabis therapy may help reduce blood pressure (BP) in older adults.
The study, published in the European Journal of Internal Medicine, found a significant reduction in 24-hour systolic and diastolic blood pressure values, with the lowest point occurring three hours after ingesting cannabis either orally via oil extracts or by smoking.
"Older adults are the fastest growing group of medical cannabis users, yet evidence on cardiovascular safety for this population is scarce," said researcher Ran Abuhasira from the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel.
"This study is part of our ongoing effort to provide clinical research on the actual physiological effects of cannabis over time," Abuhasira added.
For the study, the research team evaluated 26 patients aged 60 years or more with hypertension and a new prescription of cannabis.
The team performed the following assessments -- 24-hours ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, ECG, blood tests, and anthropometric measurements prior to the initiation of cannabis therapy and 3 months both before and three months after initiating cannabis therapy.
Among older adults with hypertension, cannabis treatment for three months was associated with a reduction in 24-hours systolic and diastolic blood pressure values with a nadir at 3 hours after cannabis administration, the study said.
The research team theorize that the relief from pain, the indication for prescription cannabis in most patients, may also have contributed to a reduction in blood pressure.
"Cannabis research is in its early stages and BGU is at the forefront of evaluating clinical use based on scientific studies," said researcher Doug Seserman from the varsity. (Agency)
The National Medicinal Plants Bard (NMPB), Ministry of AYUSH, under its Central Sector Scheme on ‘Conservation, Development and Sustainable Management of Medicinal Plants’ is supporting research & development projects on various aspects of medicinal plants to government as well as private universities/research institutions/organizations across the country.
In addition, Research Councils viz. Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH) Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM) and Central Council for Research in Siddha (CCRS), autonomous organizations under the Ministry of AYUSH are also engaged through its research institutions / centre / units in research & development activities on medicinal plants used in concerned system of medicine.
Besides, some premier research institutions under Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) like Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP), Lucknow; Indian Institute for Integrative Medicines (IIIM), Jammu; Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT), Palampur; National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI), Lucknow; North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST), Jorhat and CSIR-Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), Lucknow are engaged in research on various aspects of medicinal plants.
Directorate of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Research (DMAPR), Anand, Gujarat under Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) conducts basic, applied and adaptive research on medicinal plants. In addition, a programme on Translational Research for Developing Products and Processes from Medicinal and Aromatic Plants is implemented by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) for study on various aspects of medicinal plants and aromatic plants.
Researches undertaken at Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences under Ministry of AYUSH have developed 24 new drugs. In addition, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) has developed herbal formulations by their supported researches at CSIR-CIMAP, CSIR-NBRI and CSIR-CDRI and technology has been transferred to industry for its commercialization. And, ICAR- DMAPR is also focusing on researches and plant genetic resources/quality planting material. Institutes who are engaged towards developing new medicines can take the advantage of such quality planting material.
Ministry of AYUSH under its Central Sector Scheme for promotion of International Cooperation, (IC Scheme), undertakes various measures to promote & propagate AYUSH systems of medicine including Ayurveda across the globe; and to promote Ayurvedic medicine globally. In addition, the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences, Ministry of AYUSH has signed various Agreements/Memorandum of Understanding for promotion of Ayurveda/Ayurvedic Medicines Internationally.

London, Jan 29 (IANS) Adolescents who frequently use cannabis may experience a decline in Intelligence Quotient (IQ) over time, a new study suggests.The findings, published in the journal Psychological Medicine, revealed that there were declines of approximately 2 IQ points over time in those who use cannabis frequently compared to those who didn't use cannabis. Further analysis suggested that this decline in IQ points was primarily related to reduction in verbal IQ."Cannabis use during youth is of great concern as the developing brain may be particularly susceptible to harm during this period," said researcher Emmet Power from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI)."The findings of this study help us to further understand this important public health issue," Power added.For the study, the team involved systematic review and statistical analysis on seven longitudinal studies involving 808 young people who used cannabis at least weekly for a minimum of 6 months and 5308 young people who did not use cannabis. In order to be included in the analysis each study had to have a baseline IQ score prior to starting cannabis use and another IQ score at follow-up. The young people were followed up until age 18 on average although one study followed the young people until age 38."Previous research tells us that young people who use cannabis frequently have worse outcomes in life than their peers and are at increased risk for serious mental illnesses like schizophrenia," said researcher Mary Cannon, Professor at RCSI."Loss of IQ points early in life could have significant effects on performance in school and college and later employment prospects," Cannon added.--IANSvc/sdr/
