Bengaluru, July 26 (IANS) Leading biotech major Biocon's arm Biocon Biologics Ltd on Monday said it would make an antibody in partnership with the US-based Adagio Therapeutics to treat Covid symptoms."Adagio has granted an exclusive license to us to manufacture and market an antibody for treating Covid in India and select emerging markets," said the city-based integrated biosimilars firm in a statement.The drug (ADG20) is a novel monoclonal antibody, which targets the spike protein of Sars-CoV-2 and related coronaviruses. It is in a global clinical development by Adagio as an agent to treat and prevent Covid. "The drug can enable outpatient administration as a single injection to prevent and treat Covid symptoms," said the statement.The drug has been designed and engineered to have high potency for neutralising the infection."The drug has the potential to impact viral replication and subsequent disease through multiple mechanisms of action," said the company.Adagio is advancing the drug through multiple clinical trials on a global basis."The antibody has a long half-life, which allows for immediate and durable protection against Covid up to 1 year," added the statement.--IANSfb/vd
The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today has given its approval for changing the nomenclature & mandate of the North Eastern Institute of Folk Medicine (NEIFM) as North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda & Folk Medicine Research (NEIAFMR).
Details: Keeping in view the need, the proposal to change the nomenclature and mandate of North Eastern Institute of Folk Medicine (NEIFM) to North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda & Folk Medicine Research (NEIARMR) for imparting quality Education and Research in Ayurveda & Folk Medicine at Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh. The consequential changes will also be carried out in the Memorandum of Association & Rules and Regulations.
Impact: The inclusion of Ayurveda within the mandate of the Institute will be highly beneficial for the people of the North East region for imparting quality education and research in Ayurveda and Folk medicine. The institute will also provide opportunities for students of Ayurveda and Folk medicine not only in India but also the neighbouring countries such as Tibet, Bhutan, Mongolia, Nepal, China and other Central Asian countries.
Background: The NEIFM, Pasighat was established for systemic research, documentation and validation of traditional folk medicine and health practices of the region. The objectives for which the Institute was established include to function as an apex research centre for all aspects of Folk Medicine, to create an interface between traditional healers and scientific research, survey, documentation and validation of folk medicine practices, remedies and therapies for possible usage in public health care and future research etc.

An MoU was signed between Jamnagar based Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA) under the Ministry of Ayush and the Government of Gujarat in the presence of the Deputy Chief Minister of Gujarat Shri Nitinbhai Patel and Secretary, Ministry of AyushVaidya Rajesh Kotecha on 15th July 2021.
Through this MoU, all the institutions functioning in the Ayurveda campus in Jamnagar have been brought under the umbrella of ITRA, the only institution under the Ministry of Ayush that has been accorded the status of Institute of National Importance (INI). Underlining the importance of the MoU, shriNitinbhai said that this will pave the way of the strengthening of the education system in all branches of Ayurveda.
The MoU was exchanged between the Director, ITRA, Prof. Dr. Anup Thakar and Shri H.P. Jhala, I/C Registrar, Gujarat Ayurveda University.
“This arrangement will result, in due course, in the opening of new doors in the fields of education, research and medicine,” said the Deputy CM on the occasion of the signing ceremony. It is hoped that in the field of Ayurveda, it will be easier to prepare new teaching, medical and research methods and the study-research process will be intensified, expanding the overall scope of Ayurveda education and research.
Addressing the gathering, Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha said that in the field of Ayurveda, it will be easier to prepare new teaching, medical and research methods. He said that the study and research process can be made more in-depth and ITRA will be an exemplary institution for Ayurveda education and reshaping research institutes across the country.

Puducherry, July 15 (IANS) Sixteen children, aged between 1 and 8 years, are under treatment in various hospitals Puducherry after testing Covid-19 positive, an official said on Thursday.According to the Union Territory's Director, Health and Family Welfare, Dr S. Mohankumar, 12 of these children are aged between 1 and 5 years while the rest are above the age of 5. Five newborns to Covid positive mothers have also been tested and one has been tested negative, while the results of the other four are being awaited.Mohankumar, in a statement, also said that several children in Puducherry were affected by Covid-19 during the first and second wave of the pandemic.The Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) have also reported cases of children suffering from Covid. It said that children, brought to the medical college for other ailments, had tested positive.Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, who also holds the health portfolio, has directed the Health and Family Welfare Department to take steps to prevent children contracting the disease.--IANSaal/vd
New York, July 15 (IANS) Johnson & Johnson is pulling out its Neutrogena and Aveeno spray sunscreens from US stores after some samples showed presence of benzene -- a potentially cancer-causing chemical."While benzene is not an ingredient in any of our sunscreen products, it was detected in some samples of the impacted aerosol sunscreen finished products. We are investigating the cause of this issue, which is limited to certain aerosol sunscreen products," the company said in a statement on Wednesday.The recalled sunscreen products are packaged in aerosol cans. These include Aveeno Protect + Refresh aerosol sunscreen, and four Neutrogena sunscreen versions: Beach Defense aerosol sunscreen, CoolDry Sport aerosol sunscreen, Invisible Daily Defense aerosol sunscreen and UltraSheer aerosol sunscreen.The company noted that although the levels detected in the testing would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences, it cautions against the use of the products."Consumers should stop using these specific products and appropriately discard them," the statement said.The company, which is one of the world's biggest sellers of consumer health products by sales, said it is also notifying distributors and retailers to stop selling the products, and arranging for the return of the products.Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen, a substance that could potentially cause cancer depending on the level and extent of exposure. It is ubiquitous in the environment, and humans around the world have daily exposures indoors and outdoors from multiple sources. This information can be accessed by anyone using the 'Ayurveda Kitchen' feature on the 'Ayush Kavach' app.
Apart from this, the AYUSH department has also included many such features on the Ayush Kavach app, including videos of renowned Ayurveda Gurus, who will be defining the best possible ways to use the items available in the kitchen.
A.K. Dixit, the officer-in-charge of the Department of AYUSH, said that with Kitchen Ayurveda, "Preventive measures to boost the immunity against cold, cough and other infections can easily be taken at home.
Ayurveda guru Dr Vandana Pathak said that correct information has been given by Ayurveda experts in the app.
Many videos of home remedies have been uploaded on the Ayush Kavach app that have information on how to cure infections with mustard, turmeric, mulethi, clove, cumin, and other items.
Dr Pathak said, "Over 2,000 people watch videos at a time. In fact, informative videos on how to beat diseases like cold, acidity, pain, menstruation, diabetes through home remedies have also been uploaded on the app." she added.
The 'Ayush Kavach App' was launched by chief minister Yogi Adityanath on May 5, 2020, with the aim to boost the immunity of the people against COVID-19 and other infections through Ayurvedic medicines.
Experts believe that Ayurveda is an ancient practice and all the diseases can be healed with Ayurvedic practice.
The app broke all the records in popularity and currently, has over 20 lakh subscribers. (IANS)
