New Delhi, April 16 (IANS) As people adopt social distancing measures to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, every mom should know that newborns are most prone to infections as their immune system is still developing, and hence, they should be protected from infection-causing germs and bacteria.Simple tips like washing your hands before feeding your baby, after changing a nappy, after touching pets or any surface and not mixing baby's clothes with that of any adult's can go a long way in protecting your baby from infections, health experts said. These measures need to be followed every day, not just during the period of pandemic."Hygiene plays a key role in keeping your baby healthy. It reduces the chance of your baby falling ill due to the germs and virus she is exposed to every day. So, to ensure baby's safety, parents should maintain good hygiene, especially mothers, since the baby spends a lot of time with her," said Dr. Prathibha Babshet, Ayurveda expert, The Himalaya Drug Company.Your hands carry germs and bacteria that most often cause common cold, flu, and other infections.Washing your hands properly and regularly for a minimum of 20 seconds with water and soap is essential to remove harmful bacteria and germs, Dr. Prathibha said.It is equally important to encourage your toddler to wash hands. Keep a sanitizer with you at all times, just in case you do not have the option to wash your hands, she said. While your baby is playing, crawling, or running, she comes in contact with floor surfaces and almost everything in the house. This exposes her to all kinds of bacteria. Therefore, make sure to clean surfaces with disinfectants, the Ayurveda expert advised.New mothers should also remember that it is natural for your baby to create a mess while crawling, playing, or eating.A good bath is necessary to keep your baby clean and tidy. Make sure you replace your baby's bath towel every 3-4 months, she said, adding that it is equally important for the mother to maintain basic hygiene, which will prevent germs from passing on to the baby.As baby's clothes and diapers get soiled every other hour, make sure you change the diaper every 2-3 hours and clean or wipe the baby's bottom also.Wash your baby's clothes regularly and keep them sanitised. Be sure not to mix baby clothes with yours or any adult's, since germs can be transmitted from those to your baby's clothes. You can opt for a baby laundry detergent which is effective and gentle on baby's clothes and formulated with naturally derived cleansing agents, herbs with antibacterial properties, and is free from phosphorous, parabens, SLS/SLES/ ALS, synthetic color, added bleach, and silicates, Dr. Prathibha said.Keeping your nails long can cause a bacterial infection because dirt can accumulate in your nails."For both mother and baby, we suggest keeping nails short and clean. You can clip your baby's nails when she is sleeping. Always remember it's an essential part of baby hygiene," said the Ayurveda expert.Incorporating these practices into your daily routine will help ensure your baby is being brought up in a clean and germ-free environment. This is one of the best things you can do for your baby's health during her growing years.--IANSgb/na
The study delves into multiple aspects of eye health amidst the global health crisis, with a specific emphasis on the safe use of contact lenses.
"Our findings indicate that contact lenses remain a perfectly acceptable form of vision correction during the coronavirus pandemic, as long as people observe good hand hygiene and follow appropriate wear-and-care directions," said study lead author Lyndon Jones from the University of Waterloo in Canada.
"Unfortunately, we have seen a number of erroneous reports regarding contact lenses and spectacles in recent days. Our goal is to make sure that science-backed truths are understood and shared, helping eye care practitioners provide accurate, timely counsel to patients," Jones added.
According to the study published in the journal Contact Lens & Anterior Eye, the research team has developed some facts for eye care practitioners (ECPs) to share with anyone who relies on contact lenses or glasses or spectacles.
There is currently no scientific evidence that contact lens wearers have an increased risk of contracting COVID-19 compared with glasses or spectacles wearers, the researchers said.
Patients should consult their eye care practitioners with questions.
Thorough hand washing and drying are essential, as well as properly wearing and caring for contact lenses, ensuring good contact lens case hygiene, and regularly cleaning glasses or spectacles with soap and water.
These habits will help wearers stay healthy and out of their doctor's office or hospital, thereby minimizing impacts on the wider healthcare system.
The researchers said that no scientific evidence supports rumours that everyday eyeglasses/spectacles offer protection against COVID-19.
Whether people wear contact lenses, glasses/spectacles or require no vision correction at all, individuals should avoid touching their nose, mouth and eyes with unwashed hands, consistent with World Health Organization (WHO) and US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations.
According to the researchers, contact lens wearers who are ill should temporarily revert to wearing eyeglasses/spectacles.
They can resume use with fresh, new contact lenses and lens cases once they return to full health and have spoken with their eye care practitioner. --IANS

New Delhi, Feb 20. Sexual hygiene is important for both partners. Sushma Tomar, Infertility Specialist and Endoscopic Surgeon, Fortis Hospital, Kalyan tells you what can be done to maintain optimum sexual health without being obsessive about it.
Sexual hygiene helps prevent infections and promote confidence during sexual encounters; it also helps keep unpleasant smells and infections at bay, enhancing your sexual confidence! Here's what you must do on a regular basis to maintain sexual hygiene.
Men - Wash your penis with gentle soap water each day, gently wash underneath the foreskin by pulling it back. Base and testicles must be washed too especially since sweat and hair can produce a strong odor, just as unpleasant as in your un-deodorized armpits. These intimate areas need washing at least twice a day to avoid sweat accumulation, especially as they remain enclosed in the underwear for most of the day. Men must also make sure the area between the base of the testicles and the anus is sweat-free and odour-free; you may consider using a dusting powder. Steps to keep yourself clean will include - trimming pubic hair, washing-up before sex with soap and water
Women - While the vagina will clean itself inside your body with natural vaginal secretions, use plain, unperfumed soaps to gently wash the area around the vagina twice every day. During your period, washing more often may be helpful. One must avoid perfumed soaps and gels that could affect the healthy balance of bacteria and pH levels in the vagina and cause irritation. Internet fads and televised ads that do not have any medical proof of efficacy heavily promote scented wipes and vaginal deodorants - these are a strict no no.
Infections in the intimate areas are usually caused due to an imbalance in the pH levels. You may want to speak to your doctor who would recommend gentle intimate washes which will help regulate the pH balance to an optimum 3.5, keeping infections at bay.
Safer sexual practices mean that you can protect your vagina against these infections by using a condom every time you have sex. Lastly, you may want to switch to cotton underwear which will allow your skin to breathe; also, regularly changing your sanitary pads and tampons i.e. every 3-4hrs (depending on the flow) is recommended.
Lastly, one must understand that sexual health and sexuality reflects one's overall state of health. Coupled with exercise, healthy food nourishes your body and always allows it to be at its best, including sex. Here are some things you should try and avoid - Smoking in men causes reduction in blood flow which can lead to difficulty in having or maintaining an erection. Smoking impacts the genitals in women, among other problems it leads to reduction in lubrication. (IANSlife)
