NABH and NABL Accreditation to Two More Ayush Institutes

Amid the rising global demand for Ayush, the institutes and hospitals in the area of Indian Systems of Medicine continue to upgrade medical infrastructure and facilities at a rapid pace. Two of the premiere institutes under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) of the Ministry of Ayush namely, Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CARI), New Delhi, and Central Ayurveda Research Institute, Jhansi, have been accredited with NABH and NABL accreditations, respectively. It is noteworthy that NABH is a constituent board of the Quality Council of India, set up to establish and operate accreditation programs for healthcare organizations. The accreditation focus on patient safety and quality of healthcare based upon national/international standards. On this achievement Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of Ayush congratulated the officers and staffs of both the institutes for their dedication and consistent efforts. Shri Pramod Kumar Pathak, Special Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, representative of both the institutes were present in the formal gathering at Ayush Bhawan, New Delhi.   Central Ayurveda Research Institute, New Delhi, was established in the year 1979 under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Ministry of Ayush, and is dedicated to Clinical Research in Ayurveda and extends health care services through special OPDs in Ayurveda as General OPD, Preventive Cardiology & Lifestyle Changes, ENT OPD, Geriatric OPD, Balroga, Sandhiroga, Clinical Psychology, and Marma OPD. With such critical healthcare services on offer, the NABH accreditation will affect thousands of patients visiting the institute for a wide range of healthcare purposes. NABL accreditation to CCRAS-CARI, Jhansi (U.P.) Central Ayurveda Research Institute, Jhansi (U.P.) is one of the premium institutes of CCRAS, Ministry of Ayush, with state-of-the-art Quality Control Laboratories (Chemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacognosy), Ayurvedic Pharmacy, Central Herbarium and Museum, and National Raw Drugs Repository (NRDR). Apart from these two CCRAS institutes, the National Ayurveda Research Institute for Panchakarma (NARIP), Cheruthuruthy, Thrissur, Kerala has also got NABL M(EL)T accreditation for its clinical laboratory services. NARIP, Kerala is one of the premier research Institute under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences, Ministry of Ayush.

Ayurveda Contributing to Making Healthcare More Effective: Odisha CM

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday said that the traditional knowledge of Ayurveda along with modern healthcare system has been helpful in making our healthcare system more effective. Patnaik said this during an induction programme of 143 Ayurvedic medical officers here. The Chief Minister said that Ayurveda is an age-old knowledge of life science that has been traditionally helping millions of people in India in maintaining good health and controlling disease. Now this knowledge, along with the modern healthcare system, has been revived with structured studies to help society with more effectiveness, he stated. Welcoming the new medical officers to the healthcare system of the state, he asked them to follow the 5T (teamwork, transparency, technology and time leading to transformation) initiative to boost the state's transformative journey in healthcare. Speaking that 'Sustha Odisha, Sukhi Odisha' has been the guiding principle of his government in healthcare, Patnaik directed the newly recruited officials to work in the approach of 'every life matters'. The state government is committed to provide universal access to quality healthcare services and bring down the out-of-pocket expenses of the people. For this, the size of the budget of the health department has been increased over the years. "Our healthcare budget estimate has been increased to over Rs 12,000 crore in the current financial year which is almost double what it was three years ago. It is more than six percent of the state plan," he pointed out. The Chief Minister hoped that joining such a large number of Ayurvedic Medical Officers would improve the healthcare support system and result in greater satisfaction of the people. CCRAS Has The Potential to

Secretary, Ministry of AyushVaidya Rajesh Kotecha, visited the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), a scientific research council under the Ministry of Ayush, to review the functioning of the Council on Thursday. Reportedly, the Council has been doing considerable work in the field of Ayurvedic sciences and has also received ‘Best Institution for Research in the field of Ageing’ award from the President of India in 2019. Notably, the CCRAS is an autonomous body of the Ministry of Ayush (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy), Government of India. It is an apex body in India for the formulation, coordination, development, and promotion of research on scientific lines in Ayurveda. The Council has been considered the leading body in scientific research in the field of Ayurvedic Sciences. The secretary, while addressing the gathering of scientists and staff of the Council congratulated them and mentioned that “I am very happy to note that CCRAS has been successful in its efforts to take the benefits of Ayurveda to the citizens through scientific activities.” Secretary Kotecha instructed the officials to expedite pending matters such as building projects and other infrastructure development-related activities. He further mentioned, “The Council has been doing exemplary works in its domains, however, there are many activities that may be hampered due to delays in providing manpower or infrastructure. The Council must make sincere efforts to address these issues and wherever required, may take help of the Ministry.” On the matter of accreditation of hospitals and laboratories, the Director General apprised the Secretary that three of its labs have got NABL accreditation and 14 institutes have already applied for NABH accreditation. “The Council must make efforts to develop a mechanism to actively monitor and expedite administrative, finance and HR-related activities at all its field offices”, added Secretary Kotecha. He also recommended improving the quality of research publications of the Council. He also mentioned, “considering the current strength of technical officers, there is great scope of improving the number of indexed publications and Council should make efforts to motivate its scientists for publishing in quality high-impact journals”. Professor Rabinarayan Acharya, Director General, CCRAS, apprised Secretary Kotecha about ongoing scientific activities and key projects. He mentioned, “under the guidance and support of the Ministry of Ayush, the Council has expedited efforts to develop meaningful and public welfare-focused collaborations with institutions of repute across the world.” “The Council has collaborated with eminent institutions of US, UK, Latvia, and Germany. New Gene-Edited Tomatoes Could Boost Your Vitamin D Levels

London: Finding it hard to raise levels of Vitamin D, popularly known as the sunshine vitamin? Scientists have developed gene-edited tomatoes that could be a simple and sustainable innovation to address the global health problem. Researchers John Innes Centre in the UK used gene editing to turn off a specific molecule in the plant's genome which increased provitamin D3 in both the fruit and leaves of tomato plants. It was then converted to Vitamin D3 through exposure to Ultraviolet B light. Vitamin D is created in our bodies after skin's exposure to UVB light, but the major source is food. This new biofortified crop could help millions of people with Vitamin D insufficiency, a growing issue linked to higher risk of cancer, dementia, and many leading causes of mortality, according to the study, which appears in the journal Nature Plants. Tomatoes naturally contain one of the building blocks of Vitamin D3, called provitamin D3 or 7-dehydrocholesterol (7-DHC), in their leaves at very low levels. Provitamin D3, does not normally accumulate in ripe tomato fruits. Researchers used CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing to make revisions to the genetic code of tomato plants so that provitamin D3 accumulates in the tomato fruit. The leaves of the edited plants contained up to 600 microgram of provitamin D3 per gram of dry weight. The recommended daily intake of vitamin d is 10 micrograms for adults. When growing tomatoes leaves are usually waste material, but those of the edited plants could be used for the manufacture of vegan-friendly Vitamin D3 supplements, or for food fortification. "We've shown that you can biofortify tomatoes with provitamin D3 using gene editing, which means tomatoes could be developed as a plant-based, sustainable source of vitamin D3," said Professor Cathie Martin, corresponding author of the "Forty per cent of Europeans have vitamin D insufficiency and so do one billion people world-wide. We are not only addressing a huge health problem, but are helping producers, because tomato leaves which currently go to waste, could be used to make supplements from the gene-edited lines," Martin added. The study noted that the provitamin D enriched tomatoes could be much helpful for people adopting a plant-rich, vegetarian or vegan diet, and for the growing number of people worldwide suffering from the problem of vitamin D insufficiency. AYUSH Summit Ends With 9kcr

The first ever Global AYUSH Investment and Innovation Summit at Gandhinagar concluded with the AYUSH sector witnessing Letter of Intents of more than Rs 9,000 crore. The investment proposals have come across major categories like FMCG, medical value travel and services, pharmaceuticals, technology and diagnostics, and farmers and agriculture. "The investors and the entrepreneurs of the whole world have realised the comparative advantages which AYUSH is offering and its strengths," said Union Minister for AYUSH, Sarbananda Sonowal. Speaking at the valedictory function, he added that the summit has been instrumental in developing an enabling framework to attract investments in the sector. Sonowal said the investment and innovation opportunities in the field of AYUSH are limitless. During the summit, an MoU was signed between the AYUSH Ministry and the Defence Ministry to start AYUSH facilities in more than 35 cantonment areas across India. In total, more than 70 MoUs were signed between countries, research institutes, farmers groups and industry, said Ayush Ministry. Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister for Sport and Youth Affairs and Information and Broadcasting, Anurag Thakur said the market size of the AYUSH has witnessed a quantum jump from just over $3 billion in 2014 to $18 billion in 2022, clocking a phenomenal annual growth of 75 per cent. The Union Minister expressed hope that the country will soon see many start-ups and businesses investing in this sector.
