Gandhinagar, May 11 (IANS) Gujarat's Charity Commissioner has frozen the bank accounts of the NGO associated with independent legislator Jignesh Mevani's oxygen plant project. Mevani and the trust have decided to challenge the order in the high court.Charity Commissioner Y.M, Shukla had on Monday issued show cause notice to NGO 'We the People', seeking reply from the organisation on authorisation given to the Independent legislator from Vadgam to raise funds from the public in the name of the organisation for setting up of oxygen plants and concentrators for his constituency. For the past some time, Mevani has been in his constituency, appealing to the people to raise funds for setting up of an oxygen plant in the area."'We the People' charitable trust is a registered trust with the Charity Commissioner's office and the trust has been allowed to carry out public welfare activities and collect funds to do so. When I started appealing to the people to come forward and donate to set up an oxygen plant in Vadgam, many came forward including this organisation. We have decided to set up an oxygen plant, ventilator facilities and other important infrastructure regarding Covid care in my constituency," said Mevani."But suddenly on Monday, through the media reports, we came to know that the Charity Commissioner has frozen the SBI account of 'We the People'. The Commissioner says that as the organization didn't respond to the show cause notice issued to them on May 3, seeking to know authorisation given to me for crowdfunding. But the organization has, till date, not received any such show cause notice."This is a political vendeta against me in the worst form and that too during such critical times, when we are fighting Covid. This is a time when we should be helping each other and keeping aside all political rivalry to fight against Covid. If I am doing something in my constituency which the BJP is not doing, this seems to be a plan to prevent me from carrying out such welfare activity," added Mevani.Anand Yagnik, the advocate for the trust, said: "The charity Commissioner has acted on a vague and frivolous complaint. The Charity Commissioner does not have any jurisdiction on entertaining such vague and frivolous complaints based on assumptions that the trust is fraudulent. Before issuing such orders, the Charity Commissioner should have listened to what the trust has to say about their queries. "Merely basing on the assumption that we will misuse the funds gathered, a responsible person like the Commissioner should not carry out such orders. We are even ready to take all the permissions necessary required to set up such plants and other infrastructure for Covidcare from the government.""We are going to challenge the Charity Commissioner's order in the Gujarat High Court as well as even in the apex court, if the need arises," added Yagnik.--IANSamc/vd
Guwahati/Silchar, Jan 19 (IANS) Authorities in Assam are probing how the 1,000 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine Covishield were found "frozen" in the vaccine store of the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), officials said on Tuesday.Cachar Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli and state National Health Mission Director Lakshmanan S. have separately ordered probes to identify the reason for the 100 vials of Covishield, containing 1,000 doses, being "frozen".Health officials in Guwahati, however, are not labelling the 100 vials or the 1,000 doses a "waste" yet as they would get them tested in a laboratory to test the efficacy of the vaccine. According to SMCH officials, the development was noticed on Saturday, the first day of the nationwide vaccination drive. According to the guidelines of the Pune-based Serum Institute of India, producer of Covishield in India, the vaccine needs to be kept at a temperature between 2-8 degrees Celsius.Under Assam's cold-chain system, the vaccines are being transported and kept stored in Ice-Lined Refrigerators (ILRs) as specified by the Universal Immunisation Programme for transporting and storing any vaccines. "Probe is now on, where the shortcoming and lapses had taken place. There are chances of the vaccine getting frozen while being carried to the hospital or while kept stored in the hospital," an official said on condition of anonymity. He also said that the ILR automatic monitoring system was also not functioning properly.Assam got both Covishield and Covaxin. Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech is manufacturer of India's first indigenous vaccine Covaxin while Covishield was developed by Oxford University and pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and manufactured by the Pune-based Serum Institute of India.--IANSsc/vd
Nanjing, Dec 16 (IANS) An imported frozen food sample in the city of Wuxi, east China's Jiangsu Province, tested positive for the novel coronavirus, local authorities said Tuesday. The sample was taken from a batch of frozen sliced pig ears imported from the United States as part of a regular screening before the entry of any imported frozen food into the city's cold storage warehouse, according to the city's epidemic prevention and control office.None of the goods have been distributed into the local market. Local authorities have sealed and disinfected the food and quarantined those who had contact with the tainted items, the Xinhua news agency reported.China has stepped up efforts to block Covid-19 spread through imported foods, with the Ministry of Transport releasing a guideline in November to prevent the transmission of the virus through imported cold-chain foods in road and water transportation. The State Council joint prevention and control mechanism against Covid-19 has also unveiled a plan to realise full-chain, closed-loop, traceable management of imported cold-chain foods.--IANSrs/
Wuhan - Chinese health authorities said that two imported frozen food packaging samples have tested positive for Covid-19 in Hubei province's capital city of Wuhan, where the novel coronavirus is likely to have originated in December 2019.
In a statement on Sunday, the city's health commission said that the samples were taken from a batch of frozen pork imported from Brazil and a batch of frozen beef from Uruguay, reports Xinhua news agency.
Local authorities have taken emergency measures to seal the imported frozen goods and disinfect the storage facilities and the surrounding environment.
The frozen pork imports consisting of 1,527 boxes and weighing 27.49 tonnes were shipped from Brazil to Shanghai on June 28.
They were transported from Shanghai to Wuhan on July 27 and stored at a local cold storage on July 29.
The frozen beef contained in 1,210 boxes, weighing 26.93 tonnes, was shipped to Tianjin Municipality on March 2.
It reached Wuhan on March 28.
The nucleic acid test results of 511 samples from the cold storage, 460 samples from the frozen food packaging and 524 samples from local employees were all negative.
Earlier on November 28, Wuhan's health commission had confirmed that three imported frozen food packaging samples had tested positive for Covid-19.
It said that two samples were taken from frozen beef from Brazil in a refrigerated warehouse and the other one from frozen basa fish from Vietnam in another warehouse.
In a similar development on December 5, at least 43 people were placed under quarantine in Harbin, the capital city of Heilongjiang province, after a frozen-food sample tested positive for Covid-19.
The same day, authorities in Yaodu district in the city of Linfen, Shanxi province, announced that the outer packaging of imported fish product from a local farm-produce market tested positive for the virus.
China has increased efforts to block Covid-19 transmission through imported foods.
The Ministry of Transport had released a guideline earlier this month to prevent the transmission of the virus through imported cold-chain foods in road and water transportation.
The State Council joint prevention and control mechanism against Covid-19 has also unveiled a plan to realize full-chain, closed-loop, traceable management of imported cold-chain foods.
China has so far reported 93,577 confirmed coronavirus cases and 4,746 deaths. (IANS)
