Cellular immunity elicited by existing Covid-19 vaccines can fight the Omicron Covid variant, according to a study.
The yet to be peer-reviewed study, which focussed on Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson's Covid shots, showed that vaccines will protect against severe disease even if the antibody responses against the strain are not as strong or durable, the Financial Times reported.
"These data suggest that current vaccines may provide considerable protection against severe disease with the Sars-Cov-2 Omicron variant despite the substantial reduction of neutralising antibody responses," the researchers from Harvard medical school wrote in the study.
Previous evidence suggests that the existing vaccines lose antibody response when pitted against Omicron.
A third shot at least partially restores that antibody protection, and countries have been racing to scale up their booster programmes to avoid new restrictions.
But vaccines are still expected to protect against severe disease, and health authorities have said they would closely examine evidence such as the one contained in the new study to decide whether a switch to Omicron-targeted vaccines is necessary, the report said.
Early findings from studies in South Africa, the US, and the UK suggest that Omicron spreads faster but appears to be milder than previous variants. However, it is not clear yet if this is because of the variant itself, or because most of the world has either been infected or vaccinated or a combination of the two factors.
However, scientists have said that its high transmissibility, coupled with uneven vaccine coverage, could still mean health systems worldwide come under pressure as many more people get infected.
The World Health Organisation has repeatedly called for a more equitable distribution of vaccines. The global health body has set a target of 70 per cent coverage in all nations by mid-2022.

फाइजर के मुख्य कार्यकारी अधिकारी और अध्यक्ष अल्बर्ट बोरूला ने बताया कि हमारे नतीजे साबित करते हैं कि अगर इस दवा को उपयोग की अनुमति दी जाती है तो यह लोगों की जान बचाने में काफी कारगर साबित होगी। यह दवा कोरोना मरीजों के अस्पताल में भर्ती होने और उनमें मौत के खतरे को कम करती है। यह ओमिक्रोन के खिलाफ भी प्रभावी पाई गई है।
कंपनी ने दूसरे क्लीनिकल परीक्षण के शुरूआती नतीजे भी जारी किए हैं जिसमें मध्यम जोखिम वाले 600 मरीजों में अस्पताल में भर्ती होने का जोखिम 70 प्रतिशत कम पाया गया था। कंपनी को उम्मीद है कि इसे जल्दी ही फूड एंड ड्रग एडमिनिस्ट्रेशन की तरफ से मंजूरी मिल जाएगी।
इस दवा का पूरा कोर्स पांच दिन का है जिसमें तीन गोलियों दो बार लेनी पड़ती हैं और दो गोलियां वायरस निरोधक निरमाट्रेलविर हैं तथा तीसरी गोली वर्तमान में एचआईवी संक्रमण में दी जाने वाली रिटोनाविर है। (एजेंसी)

While most people have been affected by Covid-19 infections, some have naturally resisted the infectious disease, despite clearly being exposed to the virus.
According to researchers at the University College London, understanding this mechanism of resistance can lead to the development of universal vaccines against the debilitating virus, the BBC reported.
In the study published in the journal Nature, the team closely monitored hospital staff during the first wave of the pandemic -- including by taking regular blood samples.
The results showed one-in-10 had signs of being exposed, but never had symptoms, never tested positive, and never developed Covid-fighting antibodies in their blood.
This Covid-immunity likely came from the body learning how to fight viruses. Part of their immune system was able to get on top of the virus before it managed to take hold -- what's known as an "abortive infection", the team said.
Blood samples showed these people already had (as in before the pandemic) protective T-cells, which recognise and kill cells infected with Covid.
Their immune systems were already "poised" to fight the new disease, Dr Leo Swadling, one of the researchers was quoted as saying.
These T-cells were able to spot a different part of the virus than the bit most of the current vaccines train the immune system to find, the report said.
Vaccines are largely aimed at the spike protein, which covers the outer surface of the Covid virus. However, these rare T-cells were able to look inside the virus and find the proteins that are necessary for it to replicate.
"The healthcare workers that were able to control the virus before it was detectable were more likely to have these T-cells that recognise the internal machinery before the start of the pandemic," Swadling said.
These internal proteins are very similar in all related species of coronavirus, including the ones that are widespread and cause common cold symptoms. It means targeting these proteins with a vaccine could give some protection against all coronaviruses and new Covid variants.

These days everywhere you look, you spot people talking about things not going right or how they feel stressed and "depressed". Before we understand what depression is, let's clarify at the outset what it isn't. Depression is not feeling sad or feeling depressed momentarily. Unknowingly, we stereotypically portray depression as sadness with the extensive usage of the word.
Dr. Chandni Tugnait, a psychotherapist, life and business coach, and founder-director of Gateway of Healing says, depression is not being unhappy; it is not anger, fear or loneliness - it is none of these individually and yet it is all of these and much more.
Depression is being numb. It is nothingness. It is exhausting. It takes away all motivation and leaves a feeling of hopelessness. There is a lack of energy - it's more like a void where nothing grows or changes, where time does not exist, where there is nothing and no one. Of course, it is difficult for the person trying to cope with it as well as for the people around them.
Sometimes depression is chronic and evident but a lot of times one isn't aware of it and sometimes one is even able to camouflage it in the garb of routine & forced positivity - this last type, by the way, is the worst as sometimes we lose them to suicide - just like that - no warning, no sign, as per Dr. Tugnait.
The line between clinical depression and feeling depressed is quite fragile and often we find inappropriate self-diagnosis in this regard. Clinical depression is accompanied by a feeling of impending doom without any reason, every day, for over two weeks continuously along with fatigue, loss of interest, insomnia, etc. However, one may feel depressed for a while due to a difficult event like losing a job/loved one, etc. and may confuse it for depression and begin to pop pills. It's important to be aware of the difference - the ability to get up and fight back against these feelings, instead of accepting them or thinking that they will simply go away on their own or never go away.
The deeper the roots of depression, the more time it takes for a person to heal. It keeps a person in the loop of ï¿½being low' and makes them self-damaging. The symptoms could range from crying all day to being unable to get up from the bed to work, bathe, or even eat.
Then there are the happy and high functioning depressed people who have smiling depression. A high functioning depressed person appears energetic, carefree and cheery on the outside, most of the time and people close to them never get to know that on the inside they are being sucked into a black hole. Strangely, they would go out of their way to keep others happy, masking their own sadness.
When alone, they cry, contemplate suicide and feel exhausted from all the pretending. Why do they pretend? Well, it's funny that each time we ask someone, "How are you?", we are looking at "I am fine, thank you" as the response because if someone starts sharing how they really are, we are quick to tell them not to sulk or look at the bright side. Sharing and sulking are two different things. The fear of being judged is deeply ingrained in our beings and hence it seems like a better proposition to endure the depression in silence than to voice it out.
Contrary to what most people feel, you can't lose depression simply by 'looking at the bright side'. You may be able to camouflage your feelings to save others from getting bothered (or to save yourself from the guilt of it all) but this is plain masking and not copying or healing. People suffering from depression can't "cheer up" and that adds to more frustration.
With every depressed person (and even those suffering from anxiety or other mental health issues) there is a constant 'need' to be themselves or be how they were earlier or be how their friends and family would like them to be. This chase to "be that person" is precisely why most people, despite all the efforts and therapy, are unable to snap out of it.
Dr. Tugnait lists some ways to deal with depression-
Acceptance- Accept self and others (with or without depression) without asking for a change. This is the first step in healing. You can't change something if you resist it as the resistance keeps the energy flowing in that same direction that you wish to alter. Haven't you fought enough already? Let's change the dynamics and accept it, to release it.
Compassion- Choose compassion. Choose the wholeness of being instead of viewing yourself as someone who needs 'fixing'.
Routine- Fix a morning routine to take time to feel gratitude, meditate, read a few pages of a book while sipping tea, exercise, write a journal, sleep for 7-8 hours daily and take a cold shower.
Seek Support- Ask for help and seek professional support from a therapist in case the situation is extreme despite the self-help, positive lifestyles changes and support from family and friends. There's no shame in seeking help to be healthy!
Everyone should be more accepting of mental health issues without any judgments. Take the leap of faith when you feel ready. Until then, just breathe! You are doing fine. Depression is real but so is hope and recovery.

New Delhi, Sep 6 (IANS) A total of 72 per cent respondents of a survey think that Indian Covid vaccines are safe & effective against the coronavirus. However, 60 per cent of the respondents believe that Indian vaccines are at par with foreign Covid-19 vaccines.The survey 'Public Ki Awaaz Poll' was conducted by location-based social networking app "Public" to examine the extent of vaccine hesitancy. The poll garnered a total of 9,14,164 responses to find out the vaccine hesitancy. According to the survey, 8.8 per cent of the respondents expressed hesitation in getting vaccinated against the virus. According to the aggregate estimates, a large chunk of respondents considers it safe to take the vaccine. Around 72 per cent strongly agree that the vaccines are safe & effective and over a majority of 60 per cent respondents believe that Indian vaccines are at par with foreign Covid-19 vaccines. Around 25 per cent of the respondents said that they've already been vaccinated with both the doses.Although the majority of respondents favoured vaccines, the survey showed that 18 per cent of the respondents still haven't received even a single dose while 8.8 per cent were not sure of getting vaccines. A meagre 4 per cent strongly expressed their mistrust against the vaccines.The potential risk of side effects was the most cited reason of about 34 per cent for not administering the vaccines. As per the findings, other factors that lead to vaccine hesitancy are lack of trust for 20 per cent, health concerns for 14 per cent and never having taken any vaccine for 11 per cent.According to the poll, both community and institutional encouragement are essential in this regard. 24 per cent of the respondents said that their confidence in the efficacy of vaccines is based on the recommendations of friends and family, while 25 per cent said that they'll go by the word of healthcare experts.The vitality of information is indicated in the responses of the participants as 23 per cent hold the view that access to more information on the vaccines can help shore up confidence.On the question of 'getting information and updates on the vaccines', a whopping majority of 59 per cent respondents marked media as an important source, whereas 15 per cent rely on government ads.
