Chandigarh, June 18 (IANS) The health condition of Covid-hit former India sprinter Milkha Singh has deteriorated with fever and de-saturation, the doctors said on Friday.The legendary athlete is undergoing treatment at the PGI hospital in Chandigarh. "His condition has deteriorated with oxygen levels stipping," said a doctor of the hospital.His daughter, Mona Milkha Singh, who is also a doctor, is monitoring his health.The 91-year-old had contracted the virus last month. Chandigarh, June 13 (IANS) Former Indian women volleyball team captain Nirmal Kaur, the wife of legendary Olympian Milkha Singh, died at a Mohali hospital on Sunday due to complications related to Covid-19 infection, doctors said.She was 85 and is survived by her husband, a son, and three daughters."We are deeply saddened to inform you that Mrs Nirmal Milkha Singh passed away after a valiant battle against Covid at 4 p.m. today," a statement from the Milkha Singh family said.Milkha Singh himself is being treated for Covid-related complications at the PGIMER here."Milkha Singh's health is fine and improving, but he is still in the ICU," said a spokesperson for the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) on Saturday.Milkha Singh has been under the observation of a medical team comprising senior doctors of the institute since his hospitalisation on June 3."Our heart felt condolences on the sad demise of Mrs Nirmal Milkha Singh after battling with Covid-19," said PGIMER Director Jagat Ram in a statement."Widely known for her multiple achievements in the sports arena and her extensive philanthropic works, she will be fondly remembered for her accomplishments on and off the field," he added.--IANSvg/vd

Chandigarh, May 26 (IANS) AthleteMilkha Singh, who won multiple gold medals in sprint at 1958 and 1962 Asian Games and was admitted to hospital after he contracted Covid-19, is stable on oxygen support, doctors said on Wednesday."Mr Milkha Singh continues to be stable on oxygen support. However, he is weak and we are trying to persuade him to increase his food intake," Fortis Hospital said in a statement."Today we have stepped him down from the ICU to a room which he is sharing with his wife Mrs. Nirmal Milkha Singh who was admitted earlier in the day with Covid pneumonia. Both are being closely monitored," it said.Singh, independent India's first international class athlete and known as 'The Flying Sikh', was admitted to hospital on Monday night.The former Army man won gold medals in 200m and 400m at the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo. He followed it up with gold in 400m and 4x400m relay in 1962 Jakarta Asian Games.He also won gold in 440 yards at 1958 Commonwealth Games in Cardiff. Chandigarh, May 25 (IANS) Covid pneumonia-hit legendary athlete and 'Flying Sikh' Milkha Singh, 91, who was last week diagnosed positive, was admitted to a private hospital near here on Monday."Mr Milkha Singh was admitted at Fortis Hospital, Mohali, in the Intensive Care Unit on 24th May 2021 with Covid pneumonia. He is stable and presently on low flow oxygen and medical management," a hospital statement said.Earlier, he isolated himself at his residence here, doctors said.His wife Nirmal Milkha Singh had said a cook, who has been with the family for 50 years, was earlier diagnosed Covid-19 positive.Since the pandemic broke last year, Milkha Singh has been appealing to the people to exercise daily during the lockdown while staying at home.In his video message, he called upon people to stay indoors during the preventive lockdown to prevent the spread of coronavirus."As a sportsman, I want to tell you with a humble request that you are staying indoors and for you an exercise of 15-20 minutes is very necessary," Milkha Singh, who won India's first Commonwealth gold, has been saying.Milkha Singh's son Jeev Milkha Singh is one of the top golfing icons in the country.--IANSvg/vd
