A team of doctors from premier health research institute All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here has found that anti-diabetic ayurvedic drug BGR-34 is effective in cutting down obesity along with improving metabolism mechanisms of the patient afflicted with the chronic disease.
Led by Sudhir Chandra Sarangi, Additional Professor, Department of Pharmacology AIIMS, the team reached this conclusion following a study spanning three years.
Comprising a range of ingredients from medicinal plants, this drug has been developed after an intensive research by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and is being marketed by the AIMIL Pharmaceuticals.
The study was aimed to investigate whether BGR-34 was effective on its own or along with other allopathy drugs and if yes then at what level.
The results were encouraging. It found that the herbal drug was enough not only in reduction of fasting blood sugar through modulation of hormonal profile along with a significant body weight reduction but there were other benefits also.
The drug also modulates hormonal profile, lipid profile and triglyceride level while bringing down leptin mark which is effective in controlling fat.
Triglyceride in excess quantity is harmful for the health as it is a bad cholesterol.
Similarly, controlled lipid profile keeps heart diseases at bay while disturbance in hormonal profile can result in poor sleep, noted the authors about the research based on various health parameters.
In contrast, modulation of hormonal profile was found to be significant, resulting in increased insulin level.
The study initiated in March 2019 will soon be published in a research journal.
Sanchit Sharma, Executive Director of AIMIL Pharmaceutical, said that herbal-based ayurveda medicines are finding huge acceptance among people who are more keen into taking preventive health measures in the backdrop of rising non communicable diseases due to lifestyle changes among others.
"To cater to this increasing demand, the government too has taken various measures to boost the availability of these products based on time-tested medicinal plants as immunity boosters," he added.
In fact, yet another study published in the latest edition of Serbian Journal of Experimental and Clinical Research on Sciendo scientific platform has found that BGR-34 can help lower sugar level within three months and also exert a powerful antioxidant action to prevent complications of the diabetes which is on the increase in the country.

Cervical cancer is most common among Indian women after breast cancer, an expert said on Tuesday.
Talking to IANS, Dr Neerja Bhatla, Head Of Department, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, said that in Indian women, cervical cancer is the second most frequent cancer, but is preventable and curable, if found early and effectively treated.
However in India, an estimated 123,907 new cases and 77,000 deaths are reported each year, or one woman dying every 8 minutes, she said.
"Cervical cancer is unique in that it can be prevented by vaccination and has a long precancerous stage during which women can be tested and treated without suffering undue discomfort, anxiety, or financial hardship," she added.
The World Health Organisation has set goals to expedite progress toward the elimination of cancer and calls on countries to strive to reach the goals of vaccinating 90 per cent of girls with HPV vaccine by the age of 15, screening 70 per cent of women between the ages of 35 and 45 with a high-performance test such as the HPV test, and treating 90 per cent of women diagnosed with precancer or cancer, as well as facilitating palliative care, in the next decade.
However, the lack of awareness continues to be a key impediment to treatment participation and adherence. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has already started a screening programme for the three most frequent cancers: oral, breast, and cervical cancer.
On the occasion of International Women's Day, AIIMS Delhi screened 100 women using high precision HPV test. WHO recommends using a test that gives same day results.
This is the first time this strategy was tried at AIIMS using the GeneXpert platform that is also used for TB testing. It includes novel Point of Care HPV test and enabled Single Visit Screen and Treat approach. The report was available in only 60 minutes and based on the results, patients were offered treatment of precancer.

New Delhi, Aug 20 (IANS) The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) administration is mulling over starting an AIIMS trauma centre for non-Covid patients in a phased manner as the daily fresh Covid caseload has substantially decreased in the national capital. Declaring the centre dedicated for Covid-19 treatment in March 2020, the trauma facilities were shifted to the main AIIMS building. The Resident Doctors Association (RDA) had written several times to the AIIMS administration to start the trauma service as the Covid caseload has decreased now. In a recently held meeting with the RDA, it has been proposed to start the trauma centre for non-Covid patients in a phased manner. However, the AIIMS RDA has raised objections over the phased manner plan for the trauma centre. An RDA official told IANS that they are receiving as many traumatic patients as during pre-Covid times. They have provided us just two to three wards to start the service which is not enough to handle all patients, said the RDA officials. "In a recent general body meeting held by AIIMS administration, it was decided to allocate some general wards at Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre (JPNATC) to cater to trauma patients. Emergency, Operative and ICU are three pillars of trauma care. Unavailability of these will result in an increase in preventable deaths. AIIMS administration in a recent decision has, however, denied the availability of emergency, ICU and operative care services to trauma victims at JPNATC" the RDA official said. The RDA says that the issues regarding trauma care prevalent at Main AIIMS such as delays in emergency operative intervention, transfer out of moderate to severe injury patients, etc, will remain the same. The official said during pre-Covid times there were total 264 beds, including 38 ICU beds at the Jai Prakash Narayan Trauma Centre; post-Covid it has been decreased to 95 beds, including 18 ICU beds. "Several buildings at AIMMS are fully unoccupied during the pandemic times where Covid services can be started", said the RDA officials. The RDA official said the RDA has requested AIIMS administration to restore trauma facilities at JPNATC in total.---IANSavr/khz/bg
