आयुर्वेद में शारीरिक व्याधियों के लिए त्रिदोषों को प्रमुख कारक माना गया है। वात, पित्त और कफ के असंतुलन से त्रिदोष उत्पन्न होता है। ऋतुकाल के हिसाब से यदि आहार-विहार में परिवर्तन न किया जाए तो यह असंतुलन और अधिक बढ़ जाता है। मसलन शीतऋतु में पित्त दोष कम होता है लेकिन कफ दोष बढ़ने की संभावना बढ़ जाती है। लेकिन आयुर्वेद के कुछ कारगर उपायों को अपनाकर सर्दियों में अपने स्वास्थ्य की रक्षा की जा सकती है। आइए ऐसे ही कुछ उपायों के बारे में संक्षेप में जानते हैं।

सर्दी-ज़ुकाम - ठंढ के मौसम में सर्दी-जुकाम होना आम बात है। यदि गले में खराश और सर्दी ज़ुकाम आदि जैसी समस्या आपको हो जाए तो तत्काल 1 छोटा चम्मच अदरक में थोड़ा-सा शहद और काली मिर्च पाउडर मिलाकर मिश्रण तैयार करें। फिर इस मिश्रण को आधा सुबह और आधा रात में सोते समय खाएं। इससे राहत मिलेगी।
एसिडिटी और कब्ज़ - सर्दियों में अग्नि तेज रहती है और कई बार ज्यादा खाने - पीने की वजह से एसिडिटी और कब्ज की समस्या पैदा हो जाती है। ऐसी स्थिति में जब सीने में जलन या एसिडिटी की समस्या महसूस हो तो रात को सोते समय आधा कप ठंडे दूध में आधा कप पानी मिलाकर पीने से एसिडिटी की समस्या दूर होती है। दूसरी तरफ कब्ज़ की समस्या है तो खाने के 2-3 घंटे बाद लगभग 1 छोटा चम्मच ऐलोवेरा के गूदे को 1/2 कप गुनगुने पानी के साथ रात में सोते समय खाने से कब्ज़ दूर हो जाएगा। इसके अलावा सोते समय 1 छोटा चम्मच ईसाबगोल की भूसी को दही में मिलाकर खाने से भी पेट साफ़ होता है। लेकिन ध्यान रहे कि चिकित्सकीय परामर्श के बिना लंबे समय तक इसका सेवन नुकसानदेह साबित हो सकता है। गर्भवती स्त्रियों को इसका प्रयोग बिल्कुल भी नहीं करना चाहिए इससे गर्भस्राव हो सकता है।
जोड़ों का दर्द - सर्दियों में कई लोगों को खासकर बुजुर्गों को घुटने, पीठ या हाथ में दर्द बना रहता है। इसके लिए तिल के तेल में लहसुन की कलियां,अदरक, अजवाइन डालकर पकाएं और फिर उसे प्रभावित हिस्सों पर लगाएं। दर्द में आराम मिलेगा। (मूलतः दैनिक भास्कर में प्रकाशित)

Low back pain effects approximately 50 to 80 per cent of pregnant women. There are numerous etiologies for pregnancy-related back pain, such as mechanical effects of gravid uterus, positional stressors, and hormonal effects resulting in pain at pubic symphysis and sacroiliac joint.
Lumbar radiculopathy or true sciatica is rare and accounts only for 1 per cent of low back pain in pregnancy.
What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is also known as lumbo-sacral radicular syndrome defined as a radiating pain along the course of the sciatic nerve. The pain travels from the lower back, buttocks, posterior of the thigh, leg and the foot. It can be a deep, dull pain or a shooting, sharp pain. Sciatic pain can range from mild to severe. It often resolves with treatment.
Causes of Sciatica During Pregnancy
Sciatic pain is typically caused by lumbar spine problems, such as:
A bulging or herniated disc
Spinal narrowing or stenosis,
Osteoarthritis or degenerative disc disease
These situations can put pressure on the sciatic nerve, causing symptoms. Sciatica due to a herniated disc during pregnancy isn't common. But, sciatic-like symptoms are common with low back pain in pregnancy.
Sciatic like symptoms can also be caused by
Muscle tension and unstable joints
Pelvic bone pain
Sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction
Pelvic Girdle Pain (pelvic bone pain)
Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP) describes pain in the joints that make up your pelvic girdle; this includes the symphysis pubis joint (SPJ) at the front and the sacroiliac joints (SIJ) at the back. Majority of pregnancy-related low back pain is PGP and is often misdiagnosed as sciatica.
PGP discomfort is often felt over the pubic bone at the front, below your tummy, or across one side of your lower back, or both sides. At the front, below your tummy, or across one side of your lower back, or both sides. A diagnosis of PGP can be reached based on certain signs and symptoms that you may experience during the pregnancy or afterwards. Having one or more of them may indicate the need for a physiotherapy assessment followed by advice on appropriate management.
You may experience pain in all or some of the areas shaded in the diagrams above. You may also experience the following:
Pain when standing on one leg (e.g. Climbing stairs, dressing, or getting in or out of the bath)
Pain or difficulty moving your legs apart (e.g. Getting in or out of the car)
Clicking or grinding in the pelvic area you may hear or feel this
Limited or painful hip movements (e.g. turning over in bed)
Difficulty lying in some positions (e.g. On your back or side)
Pain during normal activities of daily life
Pain and difficulty during sexual intercourse
With PGP, the degree of discomfort you are feeling may vary from being intermittent and irritating, to being very upsetting.
This is a problem with one of the main stabilizing muscles in the buttocks. This is a common cause of sciatic pain during pregnancy and can present with PGP. This is due to the tightness of the muscle and change in posture in pregnancy.
Piriformis syndrome can be due to both muscle pain from the baby's weight that can also add stress to SI joint because it puts extra pressure on your pelvis and hip joints. Occasionally, the position of your baby can add pressure to your sciatic nerve.
Obesity or weight gain (including weight gained during pregnancy)
Prolonged sitting can also increase risk of developing sciatic pain
Muscle tension and stress to the pelvic joints, sacroiliac joint problem
Symptoms of Sciatic Pain During Pregnancy
Occasional or constant pain in one side of your buttocks or leg
Pain along the sciatic nerve path, from the buttocks down the back of your thigh and to the foot
Sharp, shooting, or burning pain
Numbness, pins and needles, or weakness in the affected leg or foot
Difficulty walking, standing, or sitting
Activities to Avoid
Avoid sitting for long periods
Avoid doing pain exaggerating activity
Do not lift heavy weights often and beyond your ability
Warm packs or cold packs depending on the comfort
Rest from the pain exaggerating activity
Managing weight gain during pregnancy
Sleeping on the side that is not affected
Use a pillow for comfort and support
Stretches (as per recommend by your physiotherapist)

The butterfly-shaped thyroid gland located at the base of the neck plays a major role in the metabolism, growth and development of the body. It also regulates multiple functions, including energy levels, weight, heart rate and mood. Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones to meet the needs of the body.
Despite the high prevalence, thyroid disorders, along with other non-communicable diseases, remain neglected. A study conducted across eight cities in India suggests that nearly one-third of people living with hypothyroidism experience the disorder but are unaware of it due to a lack of diagnosis.
Highlighting the need for timely diagnosis of thyroid-related conditions, Manoj Chadha, Senior Consultant Endocrinologist, HOPE & CARE Hospital, Vashi, Navi Mumbai said, "In Mumbai alone, we have seen 2.86 per cent cases of hypothyroidism go undiagnosed. Adults who are aged 35 years and above, pregnant, and middle-aged women, in particular, are at high risk and may suffer additional complications if a thyroid disorder is left untreated. Undetected hypothyroidism results in increased vulnerability to comorbidities such as diabetes and hypertension."
He continued, "The pathophysiological association between Type2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and thyroid dysfunction is believed to be the result of an interplay between various biochemical, genetic, and hormonal malfunctions. Poorly managed T2DM can lead to insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia and increased risk of hypoglycaemic episodes in diabetics.11 As a result, it increases the cardiovascular risk in T2DM. This can only be reduced with frequent screening to ensure timely diagnosis, which in turn will drive treatment and disease management for hypothyroidism at an early stage."
Here are 4 reasons why women should be aware of thyroid disorders-
Women are three times more likely to develop hypothyroidism than men- Moreover, hypothyroidism is especially common among women especially during child-bearing age (although women of all ages are at risk). Women with high-risk factors for hypothyroidism should particularly be encouraged to undergo screening.
These factors include- Residing in an area with moderate-severe iodine insufficiency, obesity, history of thyroid dysfunction or presence of goitre in the individual or a first-degree relative, history of recurrent miscarriages or pre-term delivery, infertility, or autoimmune diseases (Type 1 diabetes, Addison's disease, Coeliac disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis).
Elusive signs & symptoms- Don't suffer silently: Women tend to ignore their health and visit a doctor only when extremely ill or experiencing severe symptoms. Hypothyroidism symptoms, which tend to be subtle and non-specific, go under the radar. These include fatigue, excessive weight gain, constipation, dry skin, cold intolerance, lethargy, muscle cramps and puffy eyelids, which overlap with those of other disease areas or blend in with the rigours of everyday life. It is thus essential to get yourself screened, instead of waiting for multiple symptoms to persist. Take action proactively to alleviate any symptoms and avoid further complications.
The added risk of health complications- The potential consequences of thyroid disorders include more than just hair loss and weight fluctuations. If left untreated, thyroid disorders can prompt a number of health complications, from elevated cholesterol levels and depression to irregular menstrual cycles and a higher risk of infertility or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). Thyroid disorders can also amplify or worsen symptoms of menopause. In more serious cases, they may even lead to cardiovascular or neurological complications, as well as diabetes.
Timely treatment to safeguard maternal and child health- Hypothyroidism can have worrying implications for pregnant women, if not adequately managed. Hypothyroidism during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of anaemia, miscarriage, postpartum bleeding, pre-eclampsia, and placental abruption.
The thyroid hormone is also critical for the development of the fetal brain and nervous system, especially during the first trimester when the foetus depends on the mother's supply of the hormone. Thyroid disorders may also increase the risk of pre-term birth and low birth weight. Being aware and undergoing screening before and during pregnancy is important for both maternal and child health.
Women with hypothyroidism detected during pregnancy can speak to their endocrinologist to understand how to best manage their condition.

According to Sanjeeb Roy, senior intervention cardiologist, Jaipur, cases of poor heart health are increasing rapidly in the country. If the patient sees symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pain, fatigue, then the patient is at a risk of a cardiac arrest or heart attack, if there is a severe blockage in the arteries, it is treated by angioplasty or bypass surgery.
An angioplasty is an interventional procedure in which a stent is implanted in the patient without surgery. But sometimes even after having a stent implant, the patient may have to face some complications. According to one study, after implanting a normal metallic frame stent, there is a 15 to 30 per cent chance of it coming back. Apart from this, the patient has to take blood-thinning medicines for life, which also affects their quality of life.
However, to reduce all these complications, new technology like implanted stents will dissolve in the artery after two to three years. Biodegradable scaffold stent technology is very effective in reducing complications after angioplasty. This stent will dissolve in the artery two to three years after it is implanted and the patient's artery will return to its natural position, says the doctor.
"The biggest advantage of this to the patient is that there is no problem of affecting the functionality of the artery due to the placement of the stent. On the other hand, if there is a blockage back in his artery, then he can have angioplasty again. The biodegradable scaffold stent is a technology that does not use a metallic frame. This stent is made of polymers that will automatically dissolve in the body after two to three years of implantation."
"Advantages of biodegradable scaffold stents are: After the stent has dissolved, the patient will not need to take blood thinners for a long time; If there is a need to do angioplasty back in the same artery in the future, then there are no problems related to having stents already; Due to metallic stent implant, there will be no problems in tests like MRI, CT scan in this stent; The patient will feel psychological relief that there is no implant in his body," says Sanjeeb Roy, while mentioning a new technology.
Here's what to keep in mind for good heart health post angioplasty:
Avoid driving for a few weeks, and even riding in the car for long distances. As your body needs time to recuperate, make sure you're using pillows to prop yourself up and are supporting the delicate parts of your chest post-surgery.
Do not be in a rush to head back to an intense, high-stress life. Make sure your day has periods of activity interspersed with adequate periods of rest. Make sure you are working in an environment that can allow you to lie down if need be.
Shortness of breath may be experienced for a few days. Avoid exerting exercises and climbing stairs, and if this continues, speak to a family member and your doctor or surgeon.
It is likely that your doctor has recommended a change of diet for your post-surgery days. Make sure you follow it religiously and include greens and fruits as much as possible. This will aid recovery. Strictly avoid smoking and alcohol intake.

Singh points out: "When I say workout, don't confuse it with weight-lifting. Kids could do push-ups, crunches with stomachs, stretching, and other exercises to give a shape to their physique and gain strength. These exercises don't include much hard work and are also good from the kids' perspective. By doing push-ups, the child would learn to tackle weight and it will improve his shoulder and arm connection."

New York, Ever thought why cold induces tooth pain and hypersensitivity? Researchers have uncovered odontoblasts, the cells that form a tooth's dentin, have a newly discovered function -- sensing cold -- which can trigger pain in teeth.
However, the researchers, including Jochen Lennerz from Massachusetts General Hospital, have also found a way to block the pathway to cold-sensitive teeth.
"We found that odontoblasts, which support the shape of the tooth, are also responsible for sensing cold," said Lennerz.
Teeth that hurt from exposure to cold can occur for many reasons. Many people have experienced intense pain from cold when they have a hole in a tooth from an untreated cavity.
For the study, the team conducted experiments on mice whose molars were drilled under anesthesia.
Mice with dental injuries manifest pain with their behaviour; they drink up to 300 per cent more sugar water than their litter mates without dental injuries, for example.
In previous research, the team of investigators had discovered TRCP5, a protein encoded by the TRCP5 gene that is expressed in nerves in many parts of the body. Their earlier discovery allowed the researchers to zero in on TRCP5 as a mediator of pain from cold.
By studying genetically altered mice that did not have the TRCP5 gene, the researchers found that the mice with injured teeth did not manifest the increased drinking behaviour and behaved like mice without dental injuries.
The research team also identified a pharmacological target for minimising tooth sensitivity to cold. For centuries, oil of cloves has been used as a remedy for tooth pain. The active agent in oil of cloves is eugenol, which happens to block TRCP5. (IANS)
