New York - Researchers have said that Covid-19 may deepen depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among pregnant and postpartum women.
"We know the perinatal period is already a time in which women are particularly vulnerable to mental health concerns," said study author Cindy Liu from Brigham and Women's Hospital in the US.
"We primarily wanted to see what factors related to the pandemic might be associated with mental health symptoms," Liu added.
For the results, the researchers launched the Perinatal Experiences and COVID-19 Effects Study (PEACE) to better understand the mental health and well-being of pregnant and postpartum individuals within the US during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Among 1,123 of these women surveyed, the study, published in the journal Psychiatry Review, found that more than 36.4 per cent reported clinically significant levels of depression.
Before the pandemic, rates of perinatal depression were generally considered to be 15-20 percent.
Furthermore, 22.7 per cent reported clinically significant levels of generalized anxiety, and 10.3 per cent reported symptoms above the clinical threshold for PTSD.
In particular, the researchers found that approximately nine per cent of the participants reported feeling a strong sense of grief, loss, or disappointment as a result of the pandemic.
This group was roughly five times more likely to experience clinically significant measures of mental health symptoms.
More respondents (18 percent) reported being "very worried" or "extremely worried" about Covid-19 related health risks.
This group was up to over four times more likely to experience clinically significant psychiatric symptoms.
The researchers were able to examine how previous mental health diagnoses, as self-reported by the respondents, impacted these rates.
They found that those with pre-existing diagnoses were 1.6-to-3.7 times more likely to have clinically significant measures of the three conditions analyzed.
But elevated psychiatric distress was observed in participants regardless of their mental health histories.
The researchers noted that the mental health experiences during the early months of the pandemic were limited due to fears surrounding Covid-19 infection risks and halting of support services. (IANS)
New York - Researchers have discovered that anxiety is associated with an increased rate of progression from mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer's disease.
Anxiety has been frequently observed in patients with mild cognitive impairment, although its role in disease progression is not well documented.
"We know that volume loss in certain areas of the brain is a factor that predicts progression to Alzheimer's disease," said study senior author Maria Vittoria Spampinato from the University of South Carolina in the US.
"In this study, we wanted to see if anxiety had an effect on brain structure, or if the effect of anxiety was independent from brain structure in favoring the progression of disease," Spampinato added.
The study group included 339 patients, average age of 72 years, from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative 2 cohort.
Each person had a baseline diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment; 72 progressed to Alzheimer's disease while 267 remained stable.
The researchers obtained brain MRIs to determine the baseline volumes of the hippocampus and the entorhinal cortex, two areas important to forming memories.
They also tested for the presence of the ApoE4 allele, the most prevalent genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. Anxiety was measured with established clinical surveys.
As expected, patients who progressed to Alzheimer's disease had significantly lower volumes in the hippocampus and the entorhinal cortex and greater frequency of the ApoE4 allele.
Most notably though, the researchers found that anxiety was independently associated with cognitive decline.
The link between anxiety symptoms and a faster progression to Alzheimer's disease presents an opportunity for improving the screening and management of patients with early mild cognitive impairment, the researchers said.
For future research, the team would like to study MRIs obtained after the initial scan to better understand the connection between anxiety and brain structure.
The study was scheduled to be presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) from November 29 to December 5. (IANS)
London - New research adds to a growing body of evidence that young people's anxiety levels doubled during Covid-19 lockdown.
The study, published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, revealed that the number of young people with anxiety doubled from 13 per cent to 24 per cent, during the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown
"The findings suggest that there is a need to protect mental health at this time (especially managing anxiety) and support mental health services," said study author Rebecca Pearson from the University of Bristol in the UK.
The study, using Bristol's Children of the 90s questionnaire data, showed that young people (27-29 years) reported higher levels of anxiety during the early phases of the pandemic in the first national lockdown and this was higher than their parents.
Researchers also found that anxiety levels continued to remain high even when lockdown restrictions were eased in June and thus a similar situation may be expected this winter.
The findings also suggest that this could be worse for individuals with a history of mental health problems, women and those who had experienced pre-pandemic financial problems.
These findings have been highlighted by Public Health England to help influence policy and the government's understanding of the impact of Covid-19 on mental health.
There was no evidence that depression was higher overall, however, specific groups of individuals were more likely to experience greater levels of depression and anxiety during the pandemic.
Bristol's Children of the 90s health study recruited 14,500 pregnant mothers in 1991-92 and has collected almost three decades of detailed health and lifestyle data about the mothers and their babies, who will soon be turning 30.
For this study, researchers compared participants' previous years' of data with findings from two 2020 Covid-19 questionnaires to understand the impact of the pandemic on mental health.
Certain groups within the study were at greater risk of increased anxiety and/or depression during Covid-19, even after accounting for their previous history of depression and anxiety.
Researchers did not find evidence of an elevated risk of anxiety in key workers or healthcare workers.
These findings were observed in both the younger and older generations and replicated in an additional group of over 4,000 Scottish individuals.
"The highly detailed Children of the 90s questionnaire data reveals a worrying rise in young people's anxiety," said study researcher Alex Kwong.
"This looks like it is due to the pandemic itself and potentially the societal and economic fallout caused by the lockdown measures used to control the spread of the virus," Kwong added. (IANS)
