New Delhi, July 27 (IANS) The havoc induced by Covid-19 has affected sleep, and increased stress and anxiety, impacting physical as well as mental health of people. Natural antioxidant Gamma Oryzanol may help improve sleep and anxiety, say health experts.Gamma Oryzanol is a mixture of antioxidant compounds in the bran's oil fraction. Isolation, loss of work, economic and health worries during the pandemic has dramatically altered the sleeping pattern of many. While the treatment of insomnia mostly involves pharmaceutical drugs, it comes with its own side effects and many people are not really open or they don't want to take pharmacotherapy because of the side effects. However, many studies are being done to find out certain natural substances, which can help in the treatment of insomnia and Gamma Oryzanol is one of them."There are several antioxidants available for enhancing our overall health. Recently discovered Gamma Oryzanol preliminarily extracted from rice bran, is an important antioxidant," said Dr Nand Kumar, Professor at the Psychiatry Department of AIIMS, New Delhi. "Gamma Oryzanol is a great natural antioxidant which has been derived from rice bran. Many studies have been done on this which have proved that Gamma Oryzanol is good for the treatment of insomnia," added Dr Pratibha Dogra, Head, Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine, W Pratiksha Hospital, Gurugram.Dogra said a 2017 study in Korea proved that it is a natural sleeping aid. The Covid-19 outbreak in early 2020 disrupted people's routines, lifestyle and sleep quality. Disruption in work, school and home has increased stress, anxiety, and depression."Managing stress level becomes really important as stress over a period of time can lead to many diseases like sleeplessness, depression, panic attack, high blood pressure, heart diseases and diabetes etc. Stress and related medical conditions can be naturally managed by lifestyle modifications, Dietary changes little medication and consumption of natural antioxidants," Kumar said.Gamma Oryzanol also helps alleviates high fat diet-induced anxiety behaviour through downregulation of dopamine and inflammation, he said, citing a recent scientific study. Further, the natural antioxisdant also significantly improves the symptoms of dementia, without compromising cognitive function or causing other major side effects, Kumar noted.--IANSrvt/bg
Have you ever wondered what components are essential for your health and protection? Most of us have never heard of the word 'Glutathione'. Yet, this molecule is the second-most ubiquitous molecule in the body after water. Glutathione is present in every cell and is vital for your overall health and well-being. And that's because, when it comes to ridding your body of toxins, this microscopic molecule is a heavyweight champ.
How it Works?
Nihaal Mariwala, Founder and CEO, Setu India, explains: "To understand how glutathione pulls off this crucial task, let's take a look at what it's made of and how it works in the body. Glutathione is a type of small protein called 'tripeptide' and it is made up of three amino acids -- glycine, cysteine, and glutamate."
The active, or working form of the molecule is referred to as GSH. It means that the molecule is in the position to donate electrons, and therefore, be in a "working state" within your cells. Glutathione is an endogenous antioxidant, or an antioxidant that's made within your body. It exists in both its active or form (GSH) and its oxidised form (GSSG).
It's its active form, GSH, or active glutathione, works diligently to eliminate toxins from the body. It does this by neutralising free radicals or unstable molecules by donating them with electrons. Free radicals are unhealthy for your body because they react with other important molecules, leading to tissue damage. The high presence of free radicals has been linked to many chronic health issues like cardiovascular diseases, inflammatory diseases, diabetes and even cancer.
Maintaining Glutathione Levels in Your Body
The amount of glutathione in your body can reduce with time, as your body might stop producing as much of it as you age. An unbalanced, unhealthy diet, stress, and excessive exposure to environmental pollutants can also lead to reduced levels of glutathione in the body.
To maintain glutathione levels in your body, you could consume foodstuffs that stimulate its production.
Foods like broccoli, kale, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, garlic and onion help boost glutathione levels. Other supplements that could boost your body's production of the tripeptide include curcumin (the yellow chemical compound found in turmeric), N-acetylcysteine, vitamins C and E. Studies have also shown that regular physical activity for at least 30 minutes can boost glutathione levels in the body
Glutathione Benefits for Your Health and Body
Just like we have superfoods, glutathione is often referred to as a "super antioxidant". That is because it detoxifies your body by eliminating toxins from your intestines, kidneys, lungs and liver. It even helps flush out environmental pollutants, like herbicides, fungicides or heavy metals. Glutathione makes toxins water-soluble so that they can be expelled from the body through urine and sweat. Because of its powerful detoxification properties, glutathione also plays a role in improving skin health and delays early signs of ageing. In addition, it is known to be an energy and immunity booster. That is why you will find many energy supplements for men and skin creams for women claiming to contain this molecule.

New Delhi, June 18 (IANS) As the demand for natural anti-oxidants grows in India during the pandemic, a new antioxidant Gamma Oryzanol is especially gaining popularity due to several health benefits associated with it, health experts said on Friday. The antioxidants are substances that may protect your cells against free radicals, which play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases. Free radicals are molecules produced when your body breaks down food or when you're exposed to tobacco smoke or radiation.According to experts, since the pandemic started, people are focusing more on eating healthy and increasing immunity and the demand for natural antioxidants have been increased.Gamma Oryzanol, a mixture of antioxidant compounds in the bran's oil fraction, is also scientifically proven to play a role in reducing sugar and blood cholesterol levels, among other health-promoting benefits."Gamma Oryzanol helps in preventing heart attack by preventing platelet aggregation, so maintaining healthy cholesterol levels during Covid times is important," according to Praveen Chandra, Head of Department, Interventional Cardiology, Medanta-The Medicity, Gurugram. Now, Ricela Group which is the world's largest producer of refined rice bran oil, has brought Gamma Oryzanol to India in forms of capsules."Gamma Oryzanol is one-of-its-kind products in India. Presently, we are focusing on production and promotion of health-promoting value-added products from derivatives of rice through sustainable value creation," said Dr A.R. Sharma, Founder and Chairman of Ricela group. One capsule contains 150 mg of Gamma Oryzanol."It helps reduce high blood cholesterol and is effective for treating anxiety, managing sugar levels, helpful for patients of hypothyroidism and also plays an important role in preventing many lifestyle diseases," said Dt. Isha Vashisht, Vice President, AP Organics Limited.According to experts, people with obesity are more likely than normal-weight people to have other diseases that are independent risk factors for severe Covid-19, including heart disease, lung disease, and diabetes. They are also prone to metabolic syndrome, in which blood sugar levels, fat levels, or both are unhealthy and blood pressure may be high."Very recently, a study confirmed that Gamma Oryzanol is a potential therapeutic adjuvant to avoid or attenuate the cytokine storm in Covid-19 patients," said Neha Gupta, Infectious Diseases specialist, Medanta-The Medicity.Cytokine storm is an umbrella term encompassing several disorders of immune dysregulation and multiorgan dysfunction that can lead to multiorgan failure if inadequately treated.--IANSrt/na
New York, Oct 2 (IANS) Researchers have found that catalase, a naturally occurring enzyme, holds potential as a low-cost therapeutic drug to treat Covid-19 symptoms and suppress the replication of coronavirus inside the body.Catalase is produced naturally and used by humans, animals and plants. Inside cells, the antioxidant enzyme kick starts the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide, which can be toxic, into water and oxygen. According to the study, published in the journal Advanced Materials, the enzyme is also commonly used worldwide in food production and as a dietary supplement."There is a lot of focus on vaccines and antiviral drugs, and rightly so," said study senior author Yunfeng Lu from the University of California Los Angeles in the US."In the meantime, our research suggests this enzyme could offer a very effective therapeutic solution for the treatment of hyper inflammation that occurs due to SARS-CoV-2 virus, as well as hyper inflammation generally," Lu added.Lu's group developed the drug-delivery technology used in the experiments. Three types of tests were conducted, each addressing a different symptom of Covid-19.First, they demonstrated the enzyme's anti-inflammatory effects and its ability to regulate the production of cytokines, a protein that is produced in white blood cells. Cytokines are an important part of the human immune system, but they can also signal the immune system to attack the body's own cells if too many are made -- a so-called "cytokine storm" that is reported in some patients diagnosed with Covid-19.Second, the team showed that catalase can protect alveolar cells, which line the human lungs, from damage due to oxidation. Finally, the experiments showed that catalase can repress the replication of SARS-CoV-2 virus in rhesus macaques, a type of monkey, without noticeable toxicity."This work has far-reaching implications beyond the treatment of Covid-19," the study authors wrote."Cytokine storm is a lethal condition that can complicate other infections, such as influenza, as well as non-infectious conditions, like autoimmune disease," the team noted.--IANSbu/dpb
Have you ever wondered what is the importance of day and night, what is the role of sleep, how do we set a good circadian rhythm? Well all this revolves around the hormone melatonin!!
Setting up the circadian rhythm helps in production of good amounts of melatonin hormone. Melatonin does help in reducing the pigmentation, anti-ageing and also reduces hair fall so on and so forth.
Dr. Pallavi Sule, Dermatologist and Aesthetic Physician, starts by first explaining the meaning of Melatonin: "Melatonin is a hormone primarily secreted by the pineal gland which is known to regulate the sleep-wake cycle. Usually it is consumed in the form of tablets to help people in jet lag, shift works by regulating the circadian cycle as a short term treatment for trouble in sleeping".
How does melatonin get secreted?
The pineal gland is sensitive to light. When it is dark the body secretes more melatonin and prepares the body to sleep and when it is day/ light (artificial lights) the production of melatonin decreases. Low levels of the hormone give brain signals to stay awake.
So what's new about this hormone and why is it studied in more detail than before?
Sule said: "Melatonin is also known for its antioxidant benefits!! We all are living in a very stressful environment, be it the external or internal stressors like pollution, food consumed (adulteration), solar radiation, sleep patterns, work environments and so forth!! Any kind of stress releases free oxygen radicals in the body, which damages our DNA, causing degenerative diseases and autoimmune diseases. Oxidative damage also leads to aging and hair fall which we know is one of the major causes.Melatonin hormone serves as a potent antioxidant, presumptive anti aging substance and anti cancer agent."
Let's understand how sleeping according to the body clock helps our body in general health and well being!
Sule further elaborates on this imperative subject adding, "Maintaining good sleep hygiene and a good sleep quality has many advantages. The sleep wake cycle governs two hormones- Cortisol and Melatonin."
Release of Human Growth Hormone: Experts estimate that 75 per cent of this hormone is released during sleep. It is released in the Stage 3 of sleep cycle which is usually 1-1.5 hrs after one falls asleep. Sleep deprivation or altered cycles affects the release of this hormone. In children it will affect the growth and health.
Sleep and its relation with Liver: There is a great relationship between sleep cycles and liver functions. Scientific studies suggest that most patients with advanced liver diseases have disturbed sleep patterns. The liver has its own clock for detoxification and regulation of hormones. Disturbed sleep results in raised cortisol levels (stress levels) and vice versa. This hampers the regulation of hormones by the liver. Here, now the liver is overworked and cortisol levels in the body are high during daytime. This circulating cortisol hampers the liver's regulations of melatonin and so the melatonin hormone levels are also high during daytime. Resulting in day time fatigue and drowsiness, and night time alertness.
Lastly, how can we increase melatonin levels?
"Many formulations are available in the market in the form of tablets and gels for topical application. But we must not forget the most important factor in production of the right amount of melatonin hormone in the body is sleep." (IANSlife)
