मधुमेह के नियंत्रण में आयुर्वेदिक दवाओं पर शोध सीमित हैं, जिसके चलते उनका इस्तेमाल भी अभी सीमित है। एक ताजा शोध में मधुमेह रोधी एलोपैथिक दवा सीटाग्लिप्टिन तथा आयुर्वेदिक दवा बीजीआर-34 का मधुमेह रोगियों पर प्रभाव देखा गया। साथ ही यह भी पाया कि बीजीआर-34 न सिर्फ मधुमेह रोगियों में शुगर का स्तर कम करती है बल्कि अग्नाशय में बीटा कोशिकाओं की कार्यप्रणाली में भी सुधार करती है। पंजाब स्थित चितकारा विश्वविद्यालय के कालेज आफ फार्मेसी के शोधकर्ता रवीन्द्र सिंह के नेतृत्व में एक टीम ने मधुमेह से ग्रस्त सौ रोगियों पर चौथे चरण के क्लिनिकल ट्रायल किए। सर्बियन जर्नल ऑफ एक्सपेरिमेंटल एंड क्लिनिक रिसर्च में प्रकाशित इस अध्ययन के अनुसार मरीजों को दो समूह में रखा गया और डबल ब्लाइंड ट्रायल किए गए। यानी बिना जानकारी के कुछ मरीजों को सीटाग्लिप्टिन तथा कुछ को बीजीआर-34 दी गई। इसके बाद कुछ दिन तक निगरानी के बाद जब परिणाम सामने आया तो पता चला कि मधुमेह उपचार में बीजीआर-34 दवा काफी असरदार है। पहले नतीजे में ग्लाइकेटेड हेमोग्लोबिन (एचबीए1सी) के बेसलाइन में गिरावट आने की जानकारी मिली जोकि चिकित्सीय तौर पर सकारात्मक है। वहीं रेंडम शुगर जांच में भी बीजीआर-34 का असर पाया गया। बीजीआर-34 को वैज्ञानिक एवं औद्यौगिक अनुसंधान परिषद (सीएसआईआर) की लखनऊ स्थित दो प्रयोगशालाओं सीमैप एवं एनबीआरआई ने विकसित किया है तथा एमिल फार्मास्युटिकल ने इसे बाजार में उतारा है। अध्ययन के अनुसार परीक्षण शुरू करते समय रोगियों में एचबीए1सी की बेसलाइन वेल्यू 8.499 फीसदी थी। लेकिन बीजीआर-34 लेने वाले मरीजों में चार सप्ताह के बाद यह वेल्यु कम होकर 8.061, फिर आठ सप्ताह बाद 6.56 और 12 सप्ताह बाद 6.27 फीसदी तक आ गई। यह वही परीक्षण है जिसमें तीन माह के दौरान शुगर के स्तर का पता चलता है। एचबीए1सी के अलावा रेंडम शुगर जांच में भी दवा का असर देखा गया। दवा लेने से पूर्व मरीजों का शुगर का औसत स्तर 250 एमजी/डीएल था। चार सप्ताह के बाद यह 243, आठ सप्ताह के बाद 217 तथा 12 सप्ताह के बाद 114 एमजी/डीएल रिकार्ड किया गया। इन मरीजों की खाली पेट भी शुगर की जांच की गई। इसमें भी पाया गया कि दवा शुरू करने से पूर्व मरीजों में यह 176 एमजी/डीएल था जो चार सप्ताह के बाद 173, आठ सप्ताह में 141 तथा 12 सप्ताह के बाद 74 एमजी/डीएल दर्ज किया गया। जबकि भोजन करने के बाद होने वाली शुगर जांच में यह क्रमशा 216, 186 तथा 87 एमजी/डीएल दर्ज किया गया। एमिल फार्मास्युटिकल के कार्यकारी निदेशक डा. संचित शर्मा ने बताया कि शोध से स्पष्ट होता है कि बीजीआर-34 न सिर्फ मधुमेह रोगियों में शुगर को कम करती है बल्कि बीटा कोशिकाओं की कार्यप्रणाली में भी सुधार करती है जिनसे इंसुलिन उत्पन्न होता है। यह एंटीआक्सीडेंट गुणों से भी भरपूर है। यह भी पढ़े► बीजीआर-34 के फायदे और नुकसान

Researchers have found that ayurveda drug BGR-34 can help lower the sugar level within 12 weeks as well as exert a powerful anti-oxidant action to prevent diabetic complications. Published in the latest edition of Serbian Journal of Experimental and Clinical Research on Sciendo scientific platform, the study by researchers from Chitkara University in Punjab suggests that the ayurvedic drug BGR-34 is more effective for the diabetes treatment, better in efficacy, reliability and affordability with little or no adverse effects. Led by researcher Ravinder Singh, the team had conducted Phase IV clinical trials for 12 weeks on 100 diabetic patients which were divided into two groups. Subjects from one of the groups were given allopathic drug, Sitagliptin while other group was given ayurveda drug, BGR-34 without informing them about the medicines, in the double blind study. Researchers investigated the drugs on various parameters which included HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin), RBS (random blood sugar), FBS (fasting blood sugar) and PPG (postprandial glucose) values. The ayurvedic drug showed promising results. The researchers found that glyclated haemoglobin (HbA1c) level in the diabetic patients who were given BGR-34 went down significantly from the baseline value 8.499 to 8.061 per cent in the fourth week, 6.56 per cent in eighth week and 6.27 per cent in 12th week. Similarly, RBS test revealed that before taking the herbal drug, the sugar level on an average which was 250mg/dl declined to 114mg/dl in the 12th week at the same time, FBS sharply went down to 74 from 176 in the same duration. Based on these results, it can be simply concluded that BGR-34 is effective in reducing high blood sugar levels and is more potent and efficacious in decreasing the glycemic levels possibly by modulating the insulin release and strengthening the I-cell functional capacity, says the study.
