    Skin Allergies

An ‘allergy’ can be described as sensitivity of the body to a substance which does not normally affect other people. There are innumerable substances in the environment which can cause mild to violent reactions in many people. These reactions range from true allergies due to intolerance of certain foods and substances, to those resulting from pollution.

Allergies reactions may occur within a few minutes of the patient coming in contact with the allergen, or they may be delayed for several hours or even several days. Almost any part of the body that can be affected is called a shock organ. Common sites are the nose, and eyes, the skin, the chest, intestine and ears.

Allergic reactions are caused by a wide range of substances and conditions. These include pollen, dust, cosmetics and animal hair; poisonous plants, serums, vaccines and drugs; physical agents such as heat, cold and sunlight; as well as a variety of foods. Among the numerous allergies in the food department, the more common ones are oranges milk, eggs, wheat, fish, chocolates, cabbage, potatoes, tomatoes and strawberries.

    Symptoms of the Skin Allergies

The symptoms of the allergies are as varied as the substances causing the reaction. These include recurring headache, migraine, dizziness, irritability, nervousness, depression, neuralgia, sneezing, conjunctivitis, diabetes, eczema, heart-burn,, hay fever, indigestion, constipation, diarrhoea, gastric ulcer, asthma, overweight, high blood pressure, chest pain, heart attack, a stuffy or runny nose, shortness of breath, swelling of the face and eyes, ect. The same food can cause different symptoms in different people. Many allergies are multiple and may be caused by multiple allergies.

    Causative factors of different allergies

Allergy is an indication of the lowered resistance and internal disharmony caused by dietetic errors and a faulty style of living. It is believed that the major cause of allergy is feeding babies such food as cereals, meat, corn, whole milk, etc. before they react at the age of 10 to 12 months. These foods cause allergic reactions as a baby lacks the proper enzymes needed for their digestion before that age. Babies should be breastfed for at least eight months as this is nature’s way of providing all the required nutrients during this period

Another important cause of the allergy is today’s processed foods loaded with numerous chemical additives, many of which cause powerful reactions as allergic conditions can result from diet imbalances. There can be a breakdown in the baby’s ability to handle sugar due to excessive intake of

refined sugar and consequent blood sugar irregularities. Or mineral and vitamin imbalances due to defective dietary patterns.

Emotional and psychological stress can also lead to allergies. According to Dr Hans Salye, the world’s premier researcher on stress, allergic symptoms are often nothing more than the body’s reaction to stress. A person can through chronic stress, become sensitive to common foods or commonplace substances like petrol fumes.

    Ayurvedic View about Skin Allergy

According to Ayurvedic samprapti(phathogenesis), allergies are a doshik reaction to a specific allergen, such as pollen, dust, moist, chemicals on a rug, ragweed, or any strong chemical smell. These allergic reactions are classified as vata, piita, and kapha types.

    Vata-type allergies

These are characterized by bloating of the stomach, gastric discomfort, or even intestinal colic. A vata allergy may lead to sudden wheezing, sneezing, headache, ringing in the ear, or insomnia. For example, some individuals, when exposed to dust or pollen, suddenly start wheezing. The wheezing is due to the narrowing of the bronchial tree due to vata dosha.

    Pitta-type Allergies

In pitta-type allergies, piita dosha is already present under the skin. If the person comes in contact with an allergen, such as chemicals, ragweed, or certain synthetic fibres, then pitta penetrates through the capillaries due to hot and sharp qualities and creates a rash, itching, hives, urticaria, allergic dermatitis, or eczema- all pitt-type allergic reactions.

    Kapha-type Allergies

Kapha allergies are often experienced during the spring season when plants and trees shed their pollen into the atmosphere. When the pollens, such as juniper or other flower pollen, are inhaled, they enter the nasal respiratory passage, and in some people, they irritate the delicate mucous membrane, leading to hey fever, colds, congestion, a cough, sinus infection, and even asthma.

Treatment of different kinds of allergies

In order to treat allergies effectively, first, we have to find out whether it is Vata, Pitta, or Kapha type allergy. Then we can determine the specific line of treatment and I can say this is the beauty of Ayurveda because it merely focuses on symptomatic treatment. In most cases, 80% of your prakruti(Body Constitution) predicts your allergy proneness. That is, there is usually a correspondence between a person’s constitution and the type of allergic reaction.
