    Diarrhoea is a condition comprising thin watery stools occurring more frequently than usual. Technically diarrhoea is considered to be loose motion more than three times a day.

    Diarrhoea affects all the age groups of the human population.  Most commonly diarrhoea is caused due to bacteria, virus and parasitic infection of GI tract or digestive system. General means of transmission of infective agents are food, water, milk, meat, flies and faeces.

    There are certain infectious diseases such as cholera, typhoid which causes diarrhoea. Few non infective cases are also there which causes diarrhoea such as IBS, IBD, Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative colitis, lactose intolerance, Gluten allergy etc.

    As per the ayurvedic point of view diarrhoea is called ‘Atisara’. It is related to grahani Or digestive fire, when the digestive fire gets disturbed it disturbs the process of digestion and release of undigested food and partially digested food all the fluid content of the body is brought to the intestine and stools are released with excess of watery flow it could be of 6 types according to ayurveda 1.Vataj (air) 2.Pittaj(fire) 3.kaphaj(water) 4.Sannipataj (all three) 5.Bhayaj(due to fear) 6.Shokaj(due to stress or anxiety) .

    General symptoms associated with diarrhoea:

    There are various symptoms associated with diarrhoea such as calf muscle pain, weakness, abdominal ache, fatigue etc.

    The major amongst them are follow:

    1. Frequently loose watery stools
    2. Abdominal cramps
    3. Burning sensation around Anus
    4. Fever
    5. Bloating or gas
    6. Blood in stool

    Serious symptoms associated with diarrhoea:

    Usually diarrhoea is a normal detox mechanism of body but if its episodes are in excess then it leads to serious issues like abdominal cramps, bloating, nausea, vomiting, if these seriously provide discomfort more than bearing capacity. Serious conditions are as follow:

    1. 10 or more stool in a day
    2. Dehydration signs like decreased urine capacity, dry mouth, lost skin elasticity, sunken eyes, creased facial characters etc.
    3. Blood or mucus with stools
    4. Black and thick stools
    5. Weight loss
    6. Worsening symptoms

    Management Of diarrhoea by home

    Dietary regimen:

    1. Add hydrating food in the dirt such as coconut, mint, coriander, cilantro in meal and avoid spicy items
    2. Take half a teaspoon of ghee with one fourth teaspoon of ginger powder with sugar or honey two to three times a day.
    3. Take 1 tablespoon isabgol in a cup of water and add yogurt into it, use it before bedtime.
    4. Take curd rice where 1 bowl cooked rice plus add 1 tablespoon ghee and ¼ cup curd mix it well and consume to improve the digestion process.
    5. Take lassi it improves digestion and makes you feel lighter, ½ cup fresh curd plus 1/2 cup water and ⅛ cup dry ginger powder, it is also a probiotic and improves the agni.
    6. Banana are always used to stop loose motions and diarrhoea because it contains a wide range of potassium and potassium helps to absorb water from the large intestine hence prevents diarrhoea.
    7. Avoid tea, coffee , alcohol and carbonated drinks because it worsens the diarrhoea
    8. Take home made ORS solution with 1 litre water, 5 tablespoon of sugar and 1 tablespoon salt, stir it and squeeze lemon into it.
    9. Take chamomile tea for better digestion and good GI motility which also absorbs the retained water in the small intestine.
    10. Avoid stress and anxiety because according to ayurveda stress induced diarrhoea is also a prominent type of diarrhoea.
    11. Drink plenty of water and have juices and fruits in order to balance the amount of fluid lost from the body.
    12. Avoid exercise and things which often make you. Exhausted, conserve your energy.
    13. Take a light meal or have a liquid fast and rest for a day improve your digestive capacity and will stop the loose motions and its symptoms.

    How does diarrhoea occur??

    Diarrhoea occurs as a result of increased motility of gastrointestinal causing the storage of water from different spaces and passing watery stools.

    Why is diarrhoea dangerous to us?

    Diarrhoea leads to dehydration which reduces a large amount of fluids from the body and essential salts along with it leading to Hypovolemia and risk for Hypovolemic shock.

    How is dehydration treated?

    It can be treated firstly at mild by diet and juices. If at moderate level then by ORS (oral rehydration therapy) or if at severe level then by IV fluids.
