    Overview

The air passage of the lungs is lined with cells secreting mucus, which normally traps particles of dust. When the membranes are inflamed, the secretion of mucus increases, and the lining of air passage is irritated. Coughing is the action by which the excess mucus is driven out. In the process, a dry hacking sound is produced. It is a very common condition affecting persons of all ages.

Coughing is a vital body defence mechanism. It ejects everything from germs to foreign bodies from the lungs and windpipe. When a person is unable to cough which may happen, for instance, post-surgery or a chest injury, pneumonia can become a serious threat.

    Signs and Symptoms of Cough:

First, a person who is going to cough draws a deep breath in. He then closes his glottis and contracts his muscles. This builds up pressure in the chest. Then, he suddenly opens his glottis so that there is an explosive discharge of air which sweeps through the air passage and carries with it the excess secretions or, in some cases, a foreign matter which has irritated the larynx, trachea or bronchi. Irritation in the throat, discomfort or tightness in the chest and difficulty in breathing are some of the signs.

    Causes of Cough

Cough may be caused by inflammation of the larynx or the pharynx. It may also be caused by digestive disturbances. A cough can develop in the chest due to weather conditions or seasonal changes. The real cause of this disorder, however, is the clogging of the bronchial tube with waste matter.

A tickling sensation in the throat, dryness, irritation, or inflammation of the trachea or bronchus can all cases a cough.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, most coughs are caused by excess Pitta or Kapha in the bronchial tree, causing congestion and irritation of the bronchial mucus membrane.

Aggravated Vata dosha blocks the Kapha dosha in the respiratory channels, the movement of the air gets interrupted, and phlegm accumulates in the lung tissues. In order to expel this phlegm, there is a natural reaction of coughing, resulting in bronchitis. This can be attributed to many reasons like inhalation of smoke and dust, physical exertion, intake of foods and drinks that have a drying effect on the body, and the obstruction of the trachea by food particles. Another cause is suppressing the natural urges of the body, such as passing stool and urine, hunger, thirst, sleep, sneezing, breathing, yawning etc.

Management of cough through the Ayurveda

The basic strategy for managing this condition is to reduce the unwanted pitta or kapha that is creating the congestion.

To treat the cough most effectively, you need to determine whether it is a dry cough (VATA) or a productive cough with mucus coming up (KAPHA), or whether pitta has also. Become involved.

All The conditions I discussed above are determined by your Ayurveda physician after taking the proper history of the patient, then the best treatment protocol can be designed by him either through medicines only or with some simple panchakarma procedures. The treatment of cough is varied for every patient depending on age, cause, etc. But one thing that Ayurveda can insures is most chronic cough patients can be treated with a combination of medicines, panchakarma and lifestyle changes. NirogStreet offers the best approach toward any chronic or acute condition of the disease.
