Nirgundi taila prepared out of nirgundi (Vitex negundo) leaf and root is explained in Charaka samhita for vata and shoolahara purposes. This is one of the akalka taila i.e. in taila preparation, kalka dravyas are not added. The only ingredient nirgundi (Vitex negundo) is one of the identified vaatahara and shoolahara(helps to alleviate pain) drug used in the management of shoola pradhana vata vyadhis (pain dominant vata diseases).

Properties and Uses
Nirgundi is a drug of choice in Ayurvedic practice for problems where inflammation has occurred like- pharyngitis, tonsillitis, endometrosis and even orchitis. To control lice, leaves of nagod (V. negundo) are heaped in the poultry farm. It is believed that the smell of the nagod leaves repels lice. Leaves also cures sprain, headache,abdominal gas and pain, fever, toothache, asthma, cough, ulcers, boils and wounds.
Baidyanath Nirgundi tel is significantly effective to reduce all sign-symptoms of osteoarthritis, pain, swelling.
Traditionally, Nitgundi is used as local application in the form of an oil or paste to reduce pain, swelling, inflammation, headaches or poor circulation.
Direction to Use
It can be used Externally as local application and internally.
Used in Nasya(Nasal administration) karma.
Internally, it should be used under strict medical super vision.
Side Effects
Nirgundi oil may produce common side effects such as; Skin irritation can develop upon application of nirgundi oil or paste.
It can lead to alterations in the menstrual flow and might trigger allergies.
It should be avoided in pregnant women.
