Dr. Shah, please tell us about your educational background and professional qualifications briefly.

I have completed my Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery from Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Ayurveda, Pune, in 2003. I have done my M. D. in alternative medicine from All India Institute of Alternative Medicine, Kolkata, in 2005. I also have a master of arts [Sanskrit] from Bundelkhand University, Jhansi (2011) and two advanced diplomas in Psychological Counseling and Nutrition and Dietetics from Institute of Health Care Administration Chennai.

Why did you choose Ayurvedic practices?

Ayurveda is a wholesome as well as a holistic science of healing. The philosophy to approach the root cause of a disease and to then apply the treatment methodologies is quite unique. Moreover, Ayurveda offers a deeper understanding of body and mind, better than any other medical science.

What is your experience when it comes to treating patients? Do they trust the treatment?

yes, nowadays people have gained more trust in Ayurveda than in other forms of medicine. The main reason being the belief of people that Ayurveda has “no side effect” and there is also one more reason and that is the promotions and awareness programs done in recent years through media sources as well as the government.

Any challenge that you face as a practitioner?

There are two main challenges – One is the cost of medicines getting higher day by day, making Ayurvedic medicine less affordable and another is the lack of skilled therapists, which ultimately increases the cost of Panchakarma therapies.

Any out of ordinary situation that you have faced while treating a patient?

Usually i take utmost care while treating the patients and ensure that an uncontrolled situation does not arise. Nevertheless, I would like to say that sometimes the near and dear ones of the patients get so much against the Ayurvedic treatment that they compel the patients to withdraw from the treatment midway, just because they have heard some hostile comments about Ayurveda from Medicos of other Pathies.

How effective is traditional medicine as a cure in your view?

Every science has its own capabilities. Ayurveda is very good and effective in treating chronic and non-emergency conditions. With the help of Panchakarma therapies, the diseases in which the medicine has stopped working or not showing any effect, the treatment again starts to work.

What do you think of Ayurveda’s future and its role in integrated medicine?

I see a very bright future in Ayurveda both in India as well as abroad. The acceptance and popularity are gaining pace day by day. The only thing which is dragging it back is that the practitioners of Ayurveda think they are not as capable and up to the mark. It is not the limitation of this medical science, but i see it rather as the limitation of the people who think so.

About integrated medicine, Ayurveda with its unique philosophy among the Ayush system of medicinal practice has a crucial role to play. Going forth, laying down the principles and standardization of the protocols in a treatment should be done. In my opinion, homeopathy too is very good in preventive medicine; Yoga is very good in the maintenance of lifestyle; Unani and Siddha medicine systems are almost similar to Ayurveda. These have some of the very good and effective herbs even in today’s world. Ayurveda is, however, the most essential and most effective of all.

Do you think Nirogstreet is making a difference by striving to connect Ayurveda practitioners through dedicated technology platforms in its goal to mainstream Ayurveda?

Technology is a reality today. It will grow, so Ayurveda also needs to keep up with today’s trends. Nirogstreet is definitely contributing to society by connecting different Ayurveda practitioners at a single platform where they can discuss among themselves and come to a conclusion whenever needed.

Dr. Shah, any hobbies or activities you like outside your professional life?

I just keep myself busy in writing some Ayurvedic books or designing Ayurvedic courses on my laptop. Rest of the free time i stay with my family and play with my daughter Aadya.

What message would you like to convey to the people on Wellbeing?

My message to everybody is that you can’t have both wrongs (food and lifestyle) and yet be healthy. So either you should have the right food to stay healthy or work out every day to remain healthy.
