Kutaki is a herb that has high medicinal value. It is a small perennial herb and is widely grown in hilly areas of the north-western Himalayan region of India and Nepal. This plant is heavily used in Ayurvedic treatment. The leaf, barks, and underground part (rhizomes) of the plant have high medicinal uses.

Due to hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties in kutaki, it can help prevent jaundice and other liver diseases. This is because it protects the liver from cell damage and free radicals. It also has a cardioprotective effect due to its antioxidant property and helps prevent various heart diseases.

Due to the presence of anti-inflammatory properties in kutaki, it can help in managing rheumatoid arthritis. You can apply kutaki in the form of kutaki powder mixed with honey to reduce pain and inflammation caused due to rheumatoid arthritis.

Also, due to the presence of ropan (healing) and sita (cold ) properties in kutaki, it can help to manage stomatitis (painful swelling inside the mouth). You can take kutaki in the form of kutaki kwath or decoction. It can also promote faster healing of wounds when applied to the affected area. However, mix kutaki with rose water or coconut oil and then apply.

Treating diseases/ health problems with the help of kutaki

● Vitiligo

            Scientific

              Ayurvedic

Due to the phytotoxic property (due to certain constituents) in kutaki, it can help manage vitiligo. Vitiligo is a disease that leads to the formation of white patches on the skin. Regular use of kutaki can help to reduce vitiligo.

According to the Ayurvedic view, vitiligo is a disease in which melanocytes of the skin are destroyed and lead to the formation of white patches on the skin. It is also known as shwetra in Ayurveda and occurs due to the imbalance of pitta dosha that leads to the formation of ama in the body. This ama impairs other body tissues and eventually leads to the depigmentation of the skin. Due to the presence of deepan (appetizer) and bhedna (purgative) properties in kutaki, it can help manage vitiligo, remove ama from the body, and balance pitta.

● Asthma

             Scientific

Enough evidence is not available regarding the role of kutaki in asthma.

According to the Ayurvedic view, kutaki can help to manage asthma. The imbalance of vata and kapha dosha can cause asthma and breathlessness. The vitiated vata combines with deranged kapha in the lungs and leads to an obstruction in the respiratory system. This can cause swas roga (asthma) and breathlessness. Due to the presence of vata balancing and bhedna (purgative) properties in kutaki, it can help manage asthma and remove the mucus through stool. Therefore, it can help to prevent asthma.

● Rheumatoid Arthritis

              Scientific

            Ayurvedic

Due to the presence of anti-inflammatory properties in kutaki, it can help manage rheumatoid arthritis, reduce the swelling in joints, and prevent the production of chemicals causing inflammation.

According to the Ayurvedic view, rheumatoid arthritis can be caused due to vitiation of vata dosha and weak digestive fire. This causes accumulation of ama (harmful remains in the body due to indigestion), spreading in different parts of the body through vata and accumulating in the joints. This gives rise to rheumatoid arthritis or amavata. Due to the presence of deepan (appetizer) and bhedna (purgative) properties in kutaki, it can help to manage rheumatoid arthritis.
