Amalbedha is an Ayurvedic tree that is found native to the south-eastern regions of Asia. The tree is an evergreen tree from the family of purple mangosteen. It is prominently found in Myanmar and north-eastern parts of India.

In the early days, Amalbedha was primarily used for its digestive properties. It has been found to control blood sugar levels and also manage weight. It has anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial properties.

The tree is not very tall and has short branches that spread well. The juicy fruits are round and are 8 to 12 cm in diameter.

The fruits that the tree bears can be used both raw and ripe. Most often, the ripe fruits are also dried and preserved for later use. It is also used in several Indian dishes’ preparation. It mainly goes along with fish and other non-vegetarian dishes. Adding on, it is also prepared with vegetarian dishes and even in dal.

How did the word Amalbedha originate?

The word Amalbedha comes from the Assamese word "BorThekera." In scientific terms, it is known as "Garcinia pedunculata." The tree is related to the family of Garcinia mangostana or the purple mangosteen.

Historical Use of Amalbedha

Ayurvedic medicine has been used by people for centuries now. The earliest mentions of Ayurveda can be seen in 200 to 400 BCE! It is also known as the science of life. Ayurvedic herbs have been used for curing many diseases related to the heart, respiratory tract, and many more. It has also been used to treat psychological conditions like stress, insomnia, anxiety, etc.

Amalbedha is one of the Ayurvedic fruit that has been used for centuries to cure many problems. It has shown a positive effect on digestive problems. Not only that, but it is also good for respiratory problems even in severe conditions.

It has Ushna or hot potent and tastes sour with Vipaka property or taste conversion after digestion. It helps in balancing the tri Dosha. It reduces the Kapha and Vata Dosha and increases Pitta to cure the problems.

Benefits of Amalbedha

Amalbedha has been used for centuries to cure several problems related to respiration, digestions, liver problems, and kidney diseases.

In the current scenario, Amalbedha has been tested scientifically to prove its Ayurvedic properties. Even though the tests are conducted on animals, it is just to see the effects. We cannot overlook the fact that it has been used and has cured many people of the issues, and the Ayurvedic experts even recommend these ingredients.

Amalbedha works well in both diseases with low-risk and high-risk issues and has shown beneficial effects.

Look at a few detailed descriptions of scientific and Ayurvedic reasoning as to why the fruit is highly medicinal.

  1. Amalbedha for Asthma
  •
  •

Amalbedha has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties that ease the burning sensation in the neck and the condition of not being able to breathe properly. It clears up the respiratory tract and helps ease up Asthma.

Asthma is caused due to increased Vata and Kapha Dosha. The respiratory tract is eased up when the Dosha is balanced. Amalbedha not only balances Kapha and Vata Dosha but also increases the Pitta. It slowly helps in comforting the breathing problems.

  1. Amalbedha for Indigestion
  •
  •

Amalbedha has the properties of being an anti-oxidant. It helps in digesting food by regulating the enzymes. To the enzymes, Amalbedha is a catalyst that helps in better functioning. As the enzymes act, the digestion process and the food break down process becomes quicker and easy.

Digestive problems are caused due to Kapha Dosha. Amalbedha cures the Kapha Dosha when taken in the right way.

It has Ushna properties, meaning hot potent that drives the digestive fire and makes the digestion process quicker by enhancing the Agni or the digestive fire.

  1. Amalbedha for Piles
  •
  •

Amalbedha is an anti-oxidant with anti-bacterial properties. It regulates the enzymes to work better and quicker, helping in the digestion of food.

As a result, the constipated stomach is relieved, and Piles' symptoms are seen to decrease gradually.

Arsh or Piles is said to be caused as a result of an unhealthy diet or misbalanced lifestyle choices. As mentioned above, the acts result in increasing the Vata Dosha that, in turn, results in Piles.

With the Ushna property, Amalbedha increases the Agni or the digestive fire that cures constipation.

Forms of Amalbedha used in Ayurveda

Amalbedha is generally used in the powder or juice form. It is easy to take and, as already said, has many health benefits.

  1. Powder of Amalbedha

You can take the sun-dried fruit of Amalbedha and grind them up into a stack of powder.

Take it in the powder form with honey or warm water, or as directed by the physician.

  1. Amalbedha Juice

However, there are packed Amalbedha juice available in the market; the natural product's health benefits are significantly high.

You can take a few ripe Amalbedha as per the number of servings and separate the pulp from it.

Prepare a rich juice in the juicer and store it in a jar.

Take 5 to 10 ml of the juice at a time or as directed by the physician.

This helps in curing asthma and other respiratory problems.

Side Effects of Amalbedha

There are no major side effects of Amalbedha, and it is likely safe for most people. However, it would be best if you avoided overdosing on the same. Overdosing can cause liver damage.

It is not that Amalbedha fruit has the same side effects or not as the products do. However, it is good to be on the safe side and not consume what is conventionally said to be more than enough.
