The ritucharya word derives from the word 'Ritu' that means season and 'Charya' that means the routine. Ritucharya is a practice in Ayurveda, which holds a great significance. According to ritucharya, there are four types of seasons in a year based on the sun’s position. The practice tells us to live our life keeping in perspective the change of seasons, something which affects our body as well as wellbeing.
We generally change our clothing and eating habits as per the season; in winters we wear warm clothes and in summers the light clothes. We also change our food habits a little bit. Our main aim is to benefit our body with this temperature change, keeping in mind that only daily practice of these precautions can benefit our body and lead us to a healthier life.

A great daily routine in winter helps achieve the balance in our doshas. Most of the people suffer from the kapha dosha in winter but this does not mean that the other two doshas, vata and pitta do not affect us. This is the season when immune system is most vulnerable. Moreover, Ayurvedic experts recommend building more strength during this season. Winter is followed by spring season and it is the foundation when we need to take care of our immunity. Because in this season people may experience flu, cold, and other contagious diseases. - The digestion of body works well during the winter season that is why Ayurveda suggests taking heavy food, which must include sweet, salt, and sour tastes. This heavy food helps in Vata control.
- Milk, cheese, slightly oily meal, wheat, sweet are also recommended.
- Wear warm clothes and take hot oil massage.
- Cover head and ears in winters and get adequate sun exposure.
- In Ayurveda, sleeping during the day is strictly prohibited.
