Paris, Jan 11 (IANS) France has confirmed 15,944 new coronavirus cases, the lowest daily count since January 3, while the fatalities decreased for the seventh-running day to 151, according to data released by the Ministry of Health.
Sunday's new cases, down from 20,177 recorded the previous day, has brought the national tally to 2,840,864, the second highest number in Europe after the UK, Xinhua news agency reported.
The nationwide death toll rose to 67,750.
As of Sunday, 24,559 patients were hospitalised, including 2,629 in intensive care, up by 286 and 20 respectively.
So far, the country confirmed 47 cases of the new British Covid-19 variant after seven people were diagnosed in Marseille, France's second largest city, local authorities said on Sunday.
France has also confirmed three cases of the variant found in South Africa.
A total of 23 departments in the east and southeast have been under curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. since Sunday, while the rest of the country remain under curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m..
The closure of cultural venues has been extended by three weeks, while restaurants and bars would be able to resume activities in mid-February instead of on January 20.
The Moderna vaccine would be ready for use next week in hard-hit regions across the country as the first 50,000 doses will be delivered from Monday, Health Minister Olivier Veran said.
With the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine that have already been delivered, France would have vaccinated over 100,000 people over this weekend, he added.
