As soon as the winter season begins, we often find people coughing, sneezing, having a runny nose, flu and so on. These are common winter diseases. The people have a common notion that since winter has started these winter diseases will likely spread. However this is not true; although it is very general that diseases such as winter flu, cough, cold and so on spreads in winter, but it is also true that if taken right precautions and measures at right time, one can protect themselves from these diseases.
There is a very common saying that ‘prevention is better than cure, so our Ayurveda has so many prevention, which if followed properly, the winter season can become very easy for you.

Eating Habits: Winter is a season where the digestion of the body is best hence we should eat the food in proper quantity. In winters the body becomes capable of digesting any food so all food items whether sweet, salt or sour, all are acceptable in winters. The right quantity and quality ensure that the vata does not get imbalanced thus preventing our body from falling ill. The digestion of our body is good at winters but still excessive salt or sour foods should be avoided. The cold items, aerated drinks should be avoided. The diet should include ghee, hot soups, milk, and the inclusion of items such as ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, and turmeric and likewise herbs are also very beneficial. The daily gargles with hot saline water are one of the most common cold prevention.
Massage: Our body has to adjust to the low temperature so, to pamper our body, the massage should be taken. The body massage relieves dry skin, improves blood circulation, relaxes muscles and provides relief from any kind of pain.
Vitamin D: The exposure to the sunlight ensures that our body gets vitamin d so it is very important to take sunlight. In winter sunlight is scarce, so to provide Vitamin D to our body, the foods rich in Vitamin D should be taken such as tomato, cheese, dairy products, eggs, and other Vitamin D rich foods.
Clothing: Cover your body well, wear clothes which prevent you from the chilly waves and are comfortable.
