Does it also happen to you that after eating ice cream chocolate or any of your favorite sweets, you immediately feel very thirsty and feel like drinking water or any beverage? Desert means that the feeling of thirst after eating something sweet is a normal process of the body. But the question is, why does this happen? There is a scientific reason behind the answer to this question and read further to know about it.

Sugar Goes First Into The Stomach, Then Into The Blood
Caroline Apovian, professor of the Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition Department at Boston University School of Medicine in the US, says that the reason for thirst after a sweet meal is due to an increase in your blood sugar level. Actually, when you add sugar to your body system, that is, you eat something sweet then it goes to your stomach first, and then to your bloodstream.

Sugar Absorbs Cells' Water
Once the sugars or sugar particles reach your blood, they start absorbing the water present in the cells. In such a situation, the water present in the cells goes out into the blood so that the balance of sugar in the blood can be maintained. As the water in your cells starts decreasing, the cells send chemical signals to the brain, indicating to the body that it needs more water. result? You feel the urge to drink water or any beverage.

During this time your brain works in a feedback loop, which tells you when you need water the most. When your brain detects an overload of sugar, that is, when you eat more sweet, a part of the brain called the hypothalamus activates thirst.

Thirst is Induced by Eating, Not by Changes in Blood Sugar
Dr. Apovian says this series of events happen very quickly. Since glucose is absorbed by the intestine and reaches the bloodstream fairly quickly, you feel a strong thirst within just 5 to 10 minutes after eating sweets. Dr. Apovian further states that the sweet things you eat coming in ecstasy or greed and then immediately after that the thirst you feel are motivated by eating, Not because of changes in your blood sugar.

Drink Plain Water After Eating Sweet, no Sweet Drink
A glass of plain water is the best way to quench the sweetness-induced thirst after eating sugar. Dr. Apovian says, even if you are thirsty after eating sweet, you feel very much like drinking something sweet like - juice, lemonade, or hot cocoa. But do not do this at all and drink only plain water because after eating sweet things, you will not get any benefit from drinking sweet beverages. By doing this you are not only confusing your energy balance system by adding more sugar to your body but also increasing the weight of calories in the body.

In such a situation, the next time you plan to eat one of your favorite sweets, chocolate brownies, oatmeal cookies, or ice cream, keep a glass of water together to help your body balance with sugar.
