Dr. Shilpi Jain is an Ayurveda practitioner from Delhi. She is a dedicated health expert and Panchakarma specialist. She works at her clinic, ‘Sanmati Ayurvedic Biopurification Clinic’ which is situated in Jhilmil colony. We talked to Dr. Shilpi Jain about her experiences and professional journey so far. Read her interview below.

Please tell us about your educational background and professional qualifications.

I studied my bachelor in Ayurvedic medicine and surgery at A & U Tibbia College, Delhi University. I completed it in 2007. Then i took admission in M.d. in Kayachikitsa at Himachal Pradesh University and completed it in 2011.

Why did you choose Ayurvedic practices?

I chose Ayurvedic practice over other systems of medicine because i think it is the only system very close to the nature. Its principles are unique, time-proven, and oldest. On the other hand, the Allopathic medicines have several side effects, thereby the patient becomes susceptible to other diseases while getting treated for one.

What is your experience when it comes to treating patients? Do they trust the treatment?

Yes, patients trust the Ayurvedic treatment because they know that Allopathic medicines do harm them in long term use. Mostly patients want good relief without or minimum side effects.

Dr. Jain, any challenge that you face as a practitioner?

The only challenge as a practitioner is to prove ourselves that we are also equally capable of treating a patient. Practitioners of other systems and common people think that Ayurveda has no remedy for fever, loose motions, ear pain, etc. The lack of awareness is a challenge.

Any out of ordinary situation that you have faced while treating a patient?

I once saw a female patient diagnosed with Pemphigoids. It was an out of ordinary situation for me because her treatment was difficult. She had multiple mucosal ulcers, bleeding from mouth, chest infection, even no power to tolerate medicines. Sometimes, cases are too complicated and critical.

How effective is traditional medicine as a cure?

Traditional medicine is very much effective if it is applied on traditional rules of treatment by Ayurveda Acharyas. If we apply Siddhanta of Tridosha, Satmya - Asatmya, Prakriti - Vikriti, etc. We can cure any disease as well as treat a group of symptoms.

What do you think of Ayurveda’s future and its role in integrated medicine?

Ayurveda has a major role in integrated medicine because some diseases or changes in human body can never be treated by other systems alone. For example, if treatment regimen of tuberculosis demands Allopathic Antibiotics, then it also requires some liver tonic (mostly ayurvedic preparation) to cure the liver from the side effect of causing jaundice to the patient of T. B. There are so many conditions like this in which we can give complete health care to the patient if we treat through an integrated approach.

Future of Ayurveda is good, but depends on the integrated approach of all practitioners and patients. We should create some awareness among people regarding combination of treatments of all systems of medicine.

Do you think Nirogstreet is making a difference by striving to bridge the information gap and connect Ayurveda doctors to patients through its dedicated technology platforms?

Obviously it is very good initiative by Nirogstreet to connect the society with Ayurvedic practitioners. You may hear people asking or searching for good Ayurvedic practitioner for a good Ayurvedic treatment because they believe in traditional medicines since generations. But often they don't find a reliable way to address their medical need. Unfortunately, they often fall into the trap of the so called "Desi Dawakhana" which has been fooling lots of people daily. The revival efforts by Nirogstreet regarding awareness, knowledge, and accessibility are commendable.

Any hobbies or activities you engage in, outside your professional life?

I get very less time to spare for myself but i like to try and cook something different. So cooking is my hobby, of course. And i love to do paintings whenever i get the chance or time.

Dr. Jain, what message would you like to convey to the people on Wellbeing?

I always say to everyone that they should follow all the Siddhanta of Ayurveda like Dinacharya, Ritucharya, Diet regime according to Prakriti, Tridosha, and Kaal. Although it is not possible to follow it word to word as written in our texts but at least we should try as much as we can. you will yourself see the marked improvement in your health and well being.
