Black tea is the type of tea that is usually more oxidized than oolong, yellow, white, and green tea. Although all four tea types are made from the shrub Camellia sinensis, black tea is generally stronger in flavor. Two main varieties of black tea are used. They are the small-leaved Chinese variety plant used for most other types of tea, and the large-leaved Assamese plant, which is traditionally and mainly used for black tea. In recent years, various green and white tea has also been produced. The concept of black tea was originally developed in China, and it is called "red tea" instead because of the oxidized leaves when processed properly. Compared to the tea leaves used for black tea, green tea usually loses its flavor within a year, whereas black tea retains its flavor for several years. Because of this main reason, it is quite popular and is heavily used as an article of trade and import. Compressed bricks of black tea are blocks of whole or finely ground black tea leaves that have been properly packed in molds and pressed into blocks. These blocks of compressed tea leaves also serve as a form of de facto currency in Mongolia, Tibet, and Siberia in the 19th century.

Black tea is usually graded on one of four scales of quality. Whole-leaf teas are of the highest quality, with the best whole-leaf teas and graded as "orange pekoe." After the whole-leaf teas, the scale comes down to the broken leaves, fannings, which are the small pieces of tea left behind after higher grades of tea are separated to be sold. And then comes the specks of dust. Whole-leaves teas are produced with little or no alteration to the tea leaves. This results in a finished product with a coarser texture than compared to bagged teas. Whole-leaf teas are widely considered the most valuable, especially if they contain the leaves' tips, and the broken leaves are commonly sold as medium-grade loose teas.

Smaller broken varieties may be included in tea bags. Fannings are occasionally manufactured specifically for use in bagged teas. Dust is the finest particles of tea leaves left behind after the production of the high-grade varieties and are often used for tea bags with very fast and harsh brews. Fannings and dust are useful in bagged teas due to the many particles' greater surface area, which allows for fast, complete diffusion of the tea into the water. Fannings and dust have a darker color; it lacks sweetness and has a comparatively stronger flavor when brewed.

The History of Black Tea

The concept of brewing tea originated thousands of years ago. The simple act of putting leaves into hot water has provided ancient societies with medicinal benefits and a tasty beverage to enjoy by itself or with a meal or consumed for relaxation.

Many people and historians associate the discovery of black tea with the Emperor, Shen Nung, who was a Chinese ruler in the 2700s BC. According to the story, a leaf had accidentally dropped into a glass of hot water, and the concept of brewing tea came into being. This has become highly popular worldwide, and almost everyone consumes freshly brewed tea and has become an ongoing trend.

In the 1800s, tea had become popular across the world, from China to Europe, and from there, to a New World full of tea drinkers in the far west. That's where the Boston Tea Party and other events in American history show the power of tea in the marketplace. As the ancient Chinese began to produce more and more tea, they realized that tea leaves became darker and oxidized with a special fermentation process. The tea made from these leaves was more potent, and they could be stored for longer periods without losing their potency or taste. These tea types are called black tea because of the change in coloration of the leaves through the fermentation process.

The fermentation in black tea brewing is a process that oxidizes the tea leaves. It also increases the amount of caffeine by weight, making black tea a unique source of energy. High Cholesterol

Drinking about 2.5 cups per day of black tea for 12 weeks helps lower the triglycerides and LDL-TO-HDL ratio, potentially lowering the risk of heart disease.


Cholesterol is carried through the blood attached to proteins. This combination of proteins and cholesterol is called a lipoprotein. There are different types of cholesterol, based on what the lipoprotein carries. These are

Low-density lipoprotein or LDL. It is also known as "bad" cholesterol. This component transports cholesterol particles throughout the body. LDL cholesterol builds up in the walls of the arteries, which makes them hard and narrow. High-density lipoprotein or HDL, also known as the "good" cholesterol, picks up excess cholesterol and takes it back to the liver.

According to Ayurveda, high cholesterol occurs due to the imbalance of pachakagni, also known as the digestive fire. Improper digestion in the tissue level produces excess waste products or ama, which are the toxins that remain in the body due to improper digestion. This causes an accumulation of bad cholesterol and blockage in the blood vessels. Black tea can improve cholesterol levels by improving agni, known as the digestive fire, and reducing ama. This is due to the deepan (appetizer) and pachan (digestive) properties. It also helps in removing the blockage from the blood vessels by destroying all the toxins.

Therefore, it is important always strictly to monitor your intake of black tea.

Avoid black tea in case of 

- Anemia 

- Anxiety Disorders

- Glaucoma

- Irritable bowel syndrome

- Hormone-sensitive conditions like breast cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine fibroids, etc.

The amount of black tea consumed in a day depends on one individual to another. However, it is suggested that you do not consume more than three to four cups of black tea in a day. Too much of it might cause stomach related problems.

These components help increase urination in the body, which enhances the excretory system, which results in flushing out all the toxins from the body.
