Foods To Consume When You Are On Your Period

Periods are the ultimate expression of feminine qualities. Yet, for many women, periods could mean cramps, pain, and disruption of their normal life. However, periods should not be painful. As per Ayurveda, periods should be free of pain. Diet and nutrition have a very important role to play in making your periods healthier and happier. Here are a few things that you must consume during your period (or starting one week prior) to get a better flow and reduce cramps. Ready? Here we go.

Foods To Consume On Your Period

  • Oranges

Eating oranges during your period could help you in getting a better flow. Women who have scantier periods should consume oranges and other kinds of citrus fruits. In fact, if your period is late, then consuming citrus fruits, especially oranges could be highly beneficial in inducing menstruation.

  • Almonds or almond butter

It is essential to consume fiber while on your period. A great source of fiber and lean proteins is almonds. Consuming almonds directly would be very beneficial for you in this case. Almond butter can also be used as a great alternative for peanut butter or jams with sandwiches. You can even use it as a dip.

  • Chocolates

Many women crave chocolates during their periods. It helps them in feeling better. However, this is not merely because of their liking for chocolate. Chocolates can help in subsiding menstrual cramps and pains and this has been scientifically proven. A severe chocolate craving could also be because of a lack of magnesium in the diet. Both ways, it works well for women with cramps. However, only dark chocolate should be consumed. Milk chocolate would only increase the sugar levels.

  • Chamomile Tea/Ginger Tea

Tea is considered better than coffee when it comes to handling pains and cramps during periods. Chamomile tea would help in improving moods as well. Chamomile tea is good in alleviate pains. For severe cramps, ginger tea is the best option for a woman.

  • Bananas

Menstruating women often crave magnesium. This manifests itself as a craving for chocolate. However, in case such a craving arises, you must consume a small or medium-sized banana. Make sure not to have too many as it contains calories as well. Bananas are helpful in making your mood lighter. In fact, high magnesium content makes bananas 'feel-good foods'.
