It is an endocrine disorder. The condition in which thyroid gland is failed to secrete enough or sufficient thyroid hormones{deficiency of thyroid hormones} to meet all the metabolic demands of the body. If left untreated it can leads to develop many other diseases like hypertension, infertility, mental retardation,joint pain, obesity.

According to Ayurveda, this disease developed because of dosha-dushya vikruti in which kapha vridhi, vata vridhi and pittaj dushti occurs and dushyas are all dhatus mainy rasa dhatu.It is usually a kapha pradhan tridoshaj vyadhi with rasa and medo dushti predominantly.

Causes can be deficiency of thyroid hormone secretions because of certain medications, thyroid surgery, autoimmune disorders, over response of thyroid treatments.

  • manage your weight by eating healthy and well balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables,
  • avoid stress. Meditate and follow your hobbies to avoid stress and overthinking.

  • rest at least 8-9 hours a day
  • yoga and aasnas are really helpful in thyroid patients.
  • small and frequent meals.


  • sesame oil massage(abhyanga) to harmonize your body mind and spirit.
  • you can take one tablespoon of flaxseed powder with water regularly to balance the thyroid hormone.
  • consume ginger in a dry form or drink ginger tea.
  • exposure to the sun for atleast 10-15 mins a day.
  • intake of iodine rich food for regulating function of thyroid gland.
  • use coconut oil for cooking.
  • practice yoga and aasana for normalizing function of thyroid gland.
  • drink coriander seeds water.For this soak 1tbs of these seeds in a glass of water and next morning boil the water for 2-3 mins. strain it and drink this water empty stomach on daily basis.
  • exercise daily with healthy diet can really help to maintain the levels.

  • Weight gaining foods like butter, sweets, donuts, mayonnaise etc.
  • soy, peanuts
  • sushi, carrots, iodised salt


  • high fiber diet like pulses,nuts,cereal,cornflakes etc.
  • fruits incuding cherries,sweet potato
  • sunflower seeds
  • cheese, fish ,eggs, chicken
  • drink more milk
  • berries, bananas, tomatoes, yougrt


Q1.) what is a cause of hypothyroidism?
Ans-causes can be inflammation of thyroid gland, certain medications, surgery of thyroid gland, over response of thyroid treatment,iodine deficiency.

Ans- hair loss, weight gain, constipation, irregular menses, cold intolerance, depression ,muscles stiffness are some of the symptoms of hypothyroid.

Q.3 What are the complications of hypothyroidism in pregnant women?
Ans- If left untreated it can cause anemia, postpartum bleeding, preeclampsia, congestive heart failure. Untreated hypothyroid is dangerous for both mother and baby, consult your doctor soon.

Ans- Can be. It is also related to autoimmune disorder such as hypothyroidism. Low thyroid hormone levels can be a reason to create neurological disruption in the brain which can cause memory loss.
